July 2026 - Spoon Take a Walk in the style of Walk on the Wild Side
July 2026 - Spoon Take a Walk in the style of Walk on the Wild Side
June 2026 - Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark (OMD) Original is pure synth pop - happy sounding but really an indictment of the flow of manipulative information (40+ years ago!) I tried replacing all the synths with guitars.
April 2026 - Neko Case Song about Seattle/Pacific Northwest from her Middle Cyclone album
March 2026 - Blondie Intro is Toccata and Fugue from Bach as Ed used to play before Werewolves of London, for the spooky haunted house feeling. Found MIDI clip of that phrase, pulled into logic, set to use an appropriate synth sound then bounced to audio to get lined up. Equipment for this cover: Mustang Bass + midi synth bass, Telecaster w/various presets, SM58 and Natural Vocal effects chain, Logic session drummer with different parameters on various parts of the arrangement, various logic keyboard synth patches. Needs more mixing, ran out of time. Signals all still "too hot" at pre-mix stage, used Logic mastering assistant to get it at least somewhat usable.
February 2026 - Beck Included some horns. The original sampled Beastie Boys drum loop from So What'cha Want, tried to recreate the feel of that. Recorded a cajon hit into Logic sampler to use as the periodic echo-y snare hit. Guitar tracks are all Telecaster with effects chain. Logic bass, drums and synths, SM58 with "megaphone" vocal chain.
January 2026 - Pet Shop Boys Bark snare sample courtesy of Boo. Loads of synths and piano because...Pet Shop Boys... but there are guitars in here I swear, they are just quiet.
December 2025 - The Jesus and Mary Chain The original has similarities to I Love Rock & Roll by Joan Jett and Beverly Hills from Weezer, the latter of which I drew from for the guitar solo. Lyrics are an interesting fit with the Generation X song from June.
November 2025 - Eurythmics Collaboration with Valerie (Huge Shark) and Michael (Five Mod Four)
October 2025 - Beyoncé Mashup of Satellites by Beyoncé with Satellite of Love by Lou Reed
September 2025 - Skinny Puppy The references to Ohio (Kent State) prompted me to bring in an Ohio-focused riff from Pretenders (My City Was Gone)
August 2025 - Nick Cave, Australian singer (frontman for The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Grinderman...this is a Grinderman tune.
July 2025 - Jonathan Richman That Summer Feeling mashed up a bit with Golden Years by David Bowie
June 2025 - Billy Idol I covered the Generation X song Ready Steady Go. Added some little musical quotes of Dylan, Beatles and Stones in the vicinity of those lyrical references.
May 2025 - English indie band The Wedding Present I covered their song Science Fiction - one of my favorite efforts, along with mashing up their song Queen of Outer Space with Planet Claire by the B52s
April 2025 - Led Zeppelin Cover of D'yer Mak'er, somewhat in the style of the Sheryl Crow cover.
March 2025 - Rush A cover of Not Fade Away was Rush's first released record. Drawing from Buddy Holly and Stones versions, with explicit musical quotes of those at the end.
February 2025 - Etta James This is a cover of the Hank Ballard tune Henry's Got Flat Feet, which was an "answer song" to Etta James' Roll with me Henry (aka The Wallflower). Another participant did that tune, it's just above this one on the PRF album.
January 2025 - The Tragically Hip A cover of New Orleans is Sinking mashed up with Stevie's Superstition riff, because the song seems kinda spooky.
December 2024 - The Doors Main submission is a slow blues called Cars Hiss By My Window. Bonus track is a Doors song that was later covered by the Ramones, done in that style.
November 2024 - Weezer Island in the Sun featuring Valerie Polichar (Huge Shark) on vocals
October 2024 - Neutral Milk Hotel Bucket is a song written by frontman Jeff Magnum. Fuzzy guitars and arp synth.
September 2024 - Blur This is a collab with Valerie Polichar (Huge Shark) contributing the vocal. Guitars are a little sketchy, but I tried.
August 2024 - Wilco The lyrics are from Woody Guthrie, put to music by Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett of Wilco, recorded by Wilco and Billy Bragg. This was my first fully solo effort.
July 2024 - Men Without Hats The first tune Pop Goes the World is a collab with my Imaginary Set bandmates Valerie Polichar and James Seddon. Bonus track is a fuzzy guitar version of Safety Dance with vocals contributed by Valerie.
June 2024 - Cake Onion Patch Defect is Valerie and I. I really like this one.
May 2024 - Van Halen My first attempt at a PRF cover collab, with vocals and keys provided by Valerie. The singing is great, my timekeeping not so much. I might try to go back and fix it now that I know a bit more about how to use the DAW.
