Players guide Lex the Bookworm (voiced by the Chief Creative Officer of PopCap, Jason Kapalka) through a number of stages, battling creatures along the way (which are largely based on Greek mythology, One Thousand and One Nights and Gothic fiction, while the foes in the game's sequel are based on fairy tales, Journey to the West and science fiction). Each battle consists of Lex squaring off against a given enemy. Both Lex and his enemy have health meters (represented by a number of hearts) which, when depleted, signal defeat (advance to the next section if an enemy is defeated and game over when a player dies). However, unlike more traditional role-playing games where players can injure their opponents with arms or magic, enemies in Bookworm Adventures are damaged by forming words.
There are several pros that made me love and recommend this book. The first was the detail of the word above and below Everland (London). Each was rich and unique. I also loved looking at the livelihood of the daily life of each person depending on where they lived. I also enjoyed the background stories for each of the characters. I will admit that I am a sucker for origin stories, but these stories helped you see your characters in a whole new light. Gave you a chance to feel for them and to help you understand the choices that they have made. In addition, I loved how Spinale addressed her different themes and tackled them. Some of these themes were not easy such as growing up, family, and war. They were not only separate but were entangled with each other giving each theme a layer of complexity. Finally, I enjoyed seeing the classic story within this fractured fairy tale. Even though this story can stand on its own, I enjoyed seeing those classic elements that made Peter Pan, Peter Pan. I even enjoyed how Spinale created her own spins and twists on those classic Peter Pan moments and details.

Conner falls asleep in school and gets lousy grades. One day, when their grandmother visits and gives them a magical fairytale book, they have no idea that they are going to enter the fairytale world. While exploring this land they realize that it is not at all what they expected. Red Riding Hood has her own kingdom and is very picky about everything, really. Goldilocks is now an outlaw and a wanted fugitive! Queen Cinderella is about to have a child! As soon as Alex and Conner see all of this mayhem they know they must leave but with the well known Evil Queen closing in on them, they realize that they might be done for!
