God and Nuclear Energy

With apologies to my secular friends; below a spiritual defense of nuclear energy published in my Quaker Newsletter.

God and Nuclear Energy

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep…….

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

God saw the Light was good and she/he separated light from darkness. (Genesis, 2,3)

This light was not produced by burning wood or any other type fossil fuels. It was created by fusion and fission, this was God’s primordial Light and it was nuclear.

God packed Hydrogen and Helium atoms to such an extreme density that they split and flew apart with a big bang.

This energy unleashed was enormous and in God’s hands has given us life.

God put at the center of the earth an iron clump and cooked it with some radioactive uranium, potassium, and thorium to keep this concoction in a semi-molten state. When this lump started sloshing around in the center, it created the magnetic field that bends away the deadly gamma rays from the sun around the earth and all sortsof plants, trees, all sorts of sea creatures,  land animals, and birds started to grow.

God also created us in his/her image. However, the Bible records that on a few occasions we have been causing quite a bit of trouble. Starting with our ancestors, Eve and Adam, when they took a bite from the forbidden fruit in order to obtain the knowledge.

Because of this quest for knowledge we humans have put ourselves in danger by pursuing the knowledge with which God created the Universe. Quantum physics and nuclear science are two of these and one of the results of this, the nuclear bomb, has become one of the big threats to humanity.

The world is responding. One of the important responses has been that The United Nations has put in effect the Treaty on the Ban for Nuclear Weapons. New York City is openly supporting this ban and the US Congress has put forward House resolution 77. This resolution is urging Congress and the President to support the UN Treaty on the Ban of Nuclear Weapons. I urge members to support this act and pray for it to make it possible.

Global Warming/Climate Change is also a looming threat caused by our quest for knowledge and lack of restraint. We might become extinct If we don't start cutting soon our carbon emission.

The several ways to tackling this problem are: consuming less, cut out the unnecessary stuff (or tax it) use less meat, use renewable energy, and my advocacy, start including more peaceful nuclear  energy.

Peace full nuclear energy is a clean, safe and powerful source of energy, which after 60 years has become mature technology. With the help of young people, we can build and save our future.

Nuclear energy is part of creation and part of the Earth. Our own bodies evolved with radiation and we absorb and release daily 0.5 millisieverts of radiation per day
