How To Arrange A Bookshelf To Be The Highlight Of A Room
A beautiful collection of hardbound books deserves to be displayed properly on a set of bookshelves. When tastefully done, the bookshelf will be the highlight of the room. Use these general guidelines to set up the shelves.
Size matters. Bigger books should go on the bottom row of the shelf, and smaller books towards the top. Similarly sized books should be grouped together whenever possible.
Breathing room. Do not cram all your books together from one side of the shelf to the other. A good rule of thumb would be to have about ten percent free space on a given shelf. Also never stack objects or other books on top of a row of books. This looks unsightly, and can be bad for the books.
Thin the herd. Unattractive books will have to find a new home. Paperbacks are especially tacky when it comes to displaying on a bookshelf. Save those for the nightstand, home office or bathroom.
Sex sells. Do not get all excited. Simply put, the most attractively bound books should be at eye level. This will maximize the visual appeal of the book collection, and help to catch your eye as you enter the room.
Books of a feather. When all else fails, put similarly themed books next to each other. This will help to make the bookshelf not just room decoration, but a functional home library.
Class counts. Make sure all the other items you place on the bookshelf compliment the book collection. You do not want your beautiful collection of books to be upstaged by a piece that does not fit the style, or is too unusual. Try to cut down on the clutter of small items that may give the bookshelf a junky feeling.
