I was 61 years old when I had my stroke on December 2, 2011. I really had no idea what caused it or what kind of a journey I was in for afterward. Now, at age 68, I eventually got my finances and insurance needs in order. I was also able to get my "new" life in order, in many ways far better than before my stroke. In this book I discuss:* What is a stroke?* What kind of therapy should you expect?* What should you expect from Social Security disability?* What else should you do for finances and insurance?* Most importantly, how can you contribute to society and live again?
Survive & Thrive! began with a bewildering event.
I was working at my desk on Monday morning, feeling fine. I stood up and suddenly discovered I was faint. In that moment, I entered a door of uncertainty unlike any I had ever known. Never would I have imagined that at fifty-nine years old, I would land in the hospital that day. I was fit, slim, active, outgoing, and positive-minded. What a surreal experience. Whether or not you feel healthy and fit, you may still be at risk for a stroke. So, sit back, relax, and read my shocking and true story. This book reveals how I learned to face my fears, deal with doubts, and recuperate from a serious brain injury. Additionally, you will learn how to care for yourself, a loved one, or friend on their journey to wellness. Hope is a strategy only if placed in the right source, namely a higher power.
Remember, worry never got anyone anywhere. I wrote this book to show how abruptly anyone can have a stroke despite looking fit and feeling fine.
"Transformative...[Taylor's] experience...will shatter [your] own perception of the world."—ABC News
The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment
On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover.
In 2019, I faced a massive hemorrhagic stroke that felt like my world had crumbled. It seemed like my life was over, but little did I know that deep within me, a resilient warrior was waiting to emerge. My journey through recovery and discovery of this inner strength transformed my life in ways I never imagined. "Every Stroke Survivor has a Warrior Within" is the story of how I overcame adversity, found my inner courage, and redefined my life's purpose. It's a tale of resilience, hope, and the power of the human spirit.
Identity Theft is an award-winning book that follows Stanford professor Debra Meyerson’s journey to recover from a severe stroke that initially left her physically incapacitated and unable to speak. In addition to providing realistic expectations for the hard work needed to regain everyday capabilities, Meyerson focuses on the less frequently documented emotional journey in recovery. Virtually every survivor is haunted by questions like: “Who am I now?” and “How do I rebuild a meaningful and rewarding life?” after losing so much of what they had before—capabilities, careers and jobs, relationships, and more. This is a book full of hope for survivors—from stroke or other injuries—as well as their families and support networks.
Experience the searing pain that jolted through my right arm without warning, leaving me stunned and breathless. What was happening to my body? The journey of a stroke survivor goes beyond those initial moments; it's the relentless battle fought in the days, weeks, and months that ensue.
Within these pages, dive into the unfiltered reality of a stroke survivor's daily trials. Feel the intertwining of despair and hope, a delicate ballet of strength and vulnerability. Uncover the poignant messages for those grappling with high blood pressure and high cholesterol a compelling plea to collaborate closely with your physician to safeguard your future.
This book transcends mere words on paper; it stands as a testament to the unyielding human spirit, a guid- ing light of empowerment for those navigating the af- termath of a stroke. Embrace the journey, the resil- ience, and the profound strength within.
