Books that Represent

Finding the voices in American literature that actually represent America.

Hello! My name is Sophia Wright and I am a high school senior in Santa Cruz, CA. As an aspiring publisher, I’ve realized that there are major representation issues in the field of literature. So this year, I designed a Capstone Project to study and begin addressing this disparity in children’s literature.

This site is the result of that project. It contains a database of over 100 books with inclusive topics, representational characters, and largely #OwnVoices authors (though some books are only partially #ownvoices, so I highly encourage you to double check). The books are sorted alphabetically by Lexile Level (see below) and Amazon's Grade Recommendations. Almost all of the lexile headings contain both picture and chapter books, so I recommend you explore multiple lexile headings.

Please keep in mind the fact that these books have NOT been vetted for intense content, violence, or other potential triggers. These books are intended as recommendations for both independent and classroom use, so there is a wide variation in themes, content, and reading level. I recommend you conduct your own research by looking at reviews and other information.

This site is undoubtedly missing many books and topics. If you have any comments, concerns, or questions please reach out to me at shwright31@gmail.com. I would greatly appreciate feedback to make the site as unbiased and comprehensive as possible.

Feel free to share this website with whomever is interested! You can click here to learn more about the project:
