Bookfolio is an offline personal library app. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how we use it, and your choices. By using Bookfolio, you agree to this policy.
1. SUMMARY
- Your library lives on your device by default. We do not operate Bookfolio accounts or store your book data on our own servers.
- Optional Google Drive backup (Premium) stores an app backup in your Google account's app data folder, under your control.
- Subscriptions are processed by Apple or Google through RevenueCat; we do not receive your full payment card details.
- We do not sell your personal information.
2. INFORMATION WE COLLECT
2.1 Information you provide in the app
When you use Bookfolio, you may enter and store locally on your device:
- Book details (title, authors, series, publisher, ISBN, format, language, pages, dates, price, currency, quantity)
- Reading status, ratings, progress, notes, summaries, quotes, and tags
- Genres and bookshelf names you create
- Cover images you choose from your photo library (stored on your device)
- App preferences such as theme and language
This information is stored in a local database on your device unless you use Google Drive backup (see below).
2.2 Device and app information
We may access limited technical information needed for the app to work, such as:
- App version and platform (via system APIs)
- Subscription and entitlement status (via RevenueCat)
- Backup settings (e.g. auto-sync on/off, last sync time) stored in local app preferences
We do not use third-party analytics SDKs in the app code to track your in-app behavior for advertising.
2.3 Google account (optional, Premium)
If you connect Google Drive backup, we use Google Sign-In with the Google Drive app data scope so the app can:
- Read and write a backup file (bookfolio_backup_v1.json) in your Google Drive application data folder (not your general Drive files list)
- Display your connected Google account email in the app
- Upload and restore your library database and cover images as part of that backup
Google processes your sign-in according to Google's Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
You can disconnect Google Drive at any time in app settings, which stops further backups and signs out of Google for this feature.
2.4 Purchases and subscriptions
If you subscribe to Bookfolio Pro (Premium), purchase handling is provided by:
- Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) for payment processing
- RevenueCat for subscription status, entitlements, and customer support tools
RevenueCat may receive identifiers such as an anonymous app user ID and purchase receipts. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy/
We do not collect or store your full credit or debit card numbers.
2.5 Photos and media
If you add a book cover, the app uses your device's photo picker to let you select an image. We only access photos you explicitly choose. Cover images are saved on your device and may be included in Google Drive backups if you enable backup.
3. HOW WE USE INFORMATION
We use information only to:
- Provide core library features (add, edit, organize, and view books offline)
- Enforce free-plan limits and unlock Premium features when you subscribe
- Back up and restore your library to your Google Drive when you enable that feature
- Improve stability and support (e.g. responding to your contact requests)
We do not use your library content for advertising or sell it to third parties.
4. WHERE DATA IS STORED
- Library, genres, bookshelves, covers: Your device (local SQLite database and app files)
- Theme, language, backup preferences: Your device (local preferences)
- Google Drive backup: Your Google account (Drive app data folder)
- Subscription status: RevenueCat and Apple/Google as applicable
5. SHARING OF INFORMATION
We share information only in these cases:
- With service providers that help us operate specific features (Google for sign-in and Drive backup; RevenueCat and app stores for subscriptions), under their terms and only as needed for those features.
- When required by law (e.g. valid legal process).
- With your direction (e.g. when you choose to back up to Google Drive).
We do not share your book list or notes with advertisers.
6. DATA RETENTION AND DELETION
- On your device: Data remains until you delete it in the app, clear app data, or uninstall Bookfolio.
- Google Drive: Backup files remain in your Google account until you delete them in Google Drive or disconnect backup and remove the file through Google's tools.
- Subscriptions: Purchase records are retained by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat according to their policies.
To delete local app data, uninstall the app or clear its storage in your device settings. To remove cloud backups, delete the backup from your Google account or disconnect Google Drive in the app.
7. SECURITY
We use reasonable measures appropriate for a local-first app, including storing data on your device and using Google's authenticated APIs for backup. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; you are responsible for securing your device and Google account.
8. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY
Bookfolio is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
9. INTERNATIONAL USERS
If you use Bookfolio outside your home country, your information may be processed in countries where our service providers operate (including the United States, for providers such as Google and RevenueCat). Those providers may offer their own safeguards and terms.
European Economic Area / UK: Where GDPR applies, our legal bases may include performance of a contract (providing the app), your consent (e.g. connecting Google Drive), and legitimate interests (operating and securing the app). You may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port your data, and to object or withdraw consent. Contact us to exercise these rights.
California: If the CCPA/CPRA applies, you may have rights to know, delete, and correct personal information, and to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" (we do not sell personal information). Contact us to make a request.
10. YOUR CHOICES
- Use the app without signing in to Google (library stays local only).
- Disconnect Google Drive backup in Settings.
- Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple or Google account settings.
- Control photos by only selecting images you want to use as covers.
- Contact us to ask questions or request deletion assistance related to data we control.
11. THIRD-PARTY LINKS AND SERVICES
The app may link to or rely on third-party services whose privacy practices differ from ours, including:
Firebase/Google configuration files are included to support Google Sign-In on Android; analytics is not enabled for tracking in our iOS configuration. We do not run our own cloud database for your books.
12. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new version with an updated "Last updated" date. If changes are material, we may notify you in the app or through the app store listing. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the updated policy.
