INDRODUCTION TO REPAIRS
Small Tears: For minor tears, use clear tape on the back side of the page. This keeps the tear from getting worse and is a quick fix.
Large Tears: If the tear is bigger, carefully apply a thin layer of bookbinding glue to the tear, press the pages together, and let it dry under a weight.
Reattaching the Cover: When a book’s cover is loose or detached, apply bookbinding glue to the spine of the book where the cover attaches. Press the cover back onto the spine and let it dry completely, making sure it stays aligned while drying.
Broken Spine: For a book with a cracked or broken spine, use bookbinding glue along the damaged area. You can reinforce the spine with a piece of cloth or paper before applying glue. Once the glue is applied, let the book sit under a weight until it dries completely.
If the book's pages (called signatures) are coming loose from the spine, apply glue to the spine of the signature and reattach it. If necessary, stitch through the signature and spine to ensure it stays in place.
Cover Repair: If the cover is worn out or damaged, you can reinforce it with bookbinding cloth or paper. Cut the cloth or paper to fit the area that needs repair, then glue it onto the cover and let it dry.
Water-Damaged Pages: If the book has water damage, gently press the pages with a cloth or paper towel to absorb the moisture. For more serious damage, place the book in a well-ventilated area and let it dry out slowly. Avoid direct heat, which can warp the pages.
