Intentionally Christian is a six-session Zoom seminar grounded in the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, especially Life Together and Discipleship.
The course invites participants to reflect deeply on what it means to be the church today—rooted in spiritual practices, sustained by Christian community, and oriented toward loving service of neighbors in a challenging world.
The study is led by Craig L. Nessan, Professor of Theology at Wartburg Theological Seminary.
Professor Nessan brings decades of teaching, writing, and church leadership experience, with particular expertise in Bonhoeffer’s theology and its relevance for the contemporary church.
This seminar is open to all are welcome, including:

No. While the instructor and organizers are rooted in the Lutheran tradition, the course is ecumenical in spirit and accessible to Christians from many denominations and backgrounds.
The study is based on Bonhoeffer’s classic works:
Life Together
Discipleship
A study guide has been prepared specifically for this seminar. Participants will receive guidance on how to engage the readings meaningfully, whether reading deeply or selectively.
The course centers on Bonhoeffer’s vision of Christian life shaped by:
Soul care — personal prayer, Scripture, meditation, and spiritual disciplines (“life alone”)
Mutual care — worship, study, encouragement, and shared faith practices (“life together”)
Neighbor care — serving others, especially the most vulnerable, as the church “for others”
Together, these practices help the church live faithfully in the midst of today’s social, political, and spiritual challenges.
Sessions are held on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm (Central Time) via Zoom.
Each session builds on the previous one, but participants who miss a week can still benefit from later sessions.
Each session is designed to last approximately 90 minutes, including teaching, reflection, and conversation.
