Bone County Sheriff's Office
November 2013 - PRESENT
Jay Murray was appointed as Sheriff of Bone County in late November 2012, marking the culmination of a career defined by public service, leadership, and operational experience in both law enforcement and the military.
Murray began his law enforcement career in 2003 with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office in the State of New Malverne. Assigned to the Field Operations Division's northern platoon, he rapidly advanced through the ranks, ultimately attaining the position of Sergeant. In this role, Murray developed a strong foundation in patrol supervision, field leadership, and operational coordination, serving with the agency until 2008.
In 2008, Murray stepped away from law enforcement to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Serving as an infantryman, he deployed three times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During his military service, Murray filled multiple billets, most notably as a Fire Team Leader and Designated Marksman. These assignments reinforced his leadership skills, tactical expertise, and ability to operate effectively in high-stress environments.
Murray returned to law enforcement in late 2011 when he was hired as a Sergeant by former colleague Connor Callaway, who was serving as Sheriff for Bone County in New Malverne. His performance quickly distinguished him among his peers, earning him the Deputy of the Quarter award in the second quarter of 2012. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to Lieutenant and appointed Commander of the Patrol Division, placing him in charge of overseeing countywide patrol operations and personnel.
Murray served in this role until November 2013, when Sheriff Callaway stepped down from office. Recognizing his extensive experience, proven leadership, and commitment to public safety, state officials approached Murray to assume the role of Sheriff of Bone County. He gladly accepted the appointment, continuing his lifelong dedication to service and leadership within the community.
As Sheriff, Jay Murray brings together the discipline of military service and the professionalism of law enforcement, leading the Bone County Sheriff’s Office with integrity, accountability, and a strong focus on operational excellence and community safety.
