Known to the Native Americans as Canaresse, meaning “shaggy bushes” or “thicket,” the name Bombay Hook evolved from the Dutch name “Bompies Hoeck” meaning “little-tree point.” Dutch settlers cut salt hay from the marsh, trapped muskrats and hunted waterfowl.
