“Say it in pictures design competition”

This year, the Nowra Domestic Violence, White Ribbon Working Party is inviting children and young people from the Shoalhaven to use their creative skills to talk about Respectful Relationships and Gender Equality.

Budding young artists can win $150 for a first prize, $125 for a second and $75 for a third prize, in each of the four age categories (Kindergarten up to 24 year old youth). Children can submit a video, drawing, painting, photography, video or storyboard that shows their interpretation of the theme ‘respectful relationships and gender equality’.

Schools this week will also be invited to support their students and classes to submit artwork, and start a broader conversation about gender equality and safety in relationships in their classrooms.

The competition closes on Friday, 27th September 2019, with the winner announced at a White Ribbon Morning Tea on Friday, 22nd November 2019.

Australian research has found that one in four children are exposed to domestic violence and women who were exposed to domestic violence as children were more than twice as likely to be subjected to partner violence themselves. Gender inequality is cited as a key determinant or factor that underpins violence against women and therefore the Nowra DV Committee recognises the importance of educating children and young people about gender equality and respectful relationships. This competition is a part of that ongoing conversation.
