Tennis Report

Students from Bomaderry High School competed in the recent CHS Individuals Tennis Championships of NSW in Parramatta. The students were originally selected from the South Coast Regional Trials, which comprised of schools from Bega to Bowral and everywhere in-between, to compete in the CHS knock out tournament in both singles and doubles. Both boys and girls were selected from BHS to represent their region in the Under 15’s and Opens Categories. As mentioned in the previous school newsletter, Harrison G (Year 12) was selected to go to Nationals held later this month in Bathurst, for the Opens division. Year 10 student, Emily B made it to the 2nd round of singles in the Under 15’s division and we look forward to seeing Emily play in the Open’s category next year.

BHS also had students representing the South Coast region in the Under 15’s categories, with many Year 7 students being selected, which is indeed very promising for tennis at our school in the future. Year 7 student, Thomas F was seeded 17th in the singles draw and made it to the 3rd round of singles and the quarter finals of the doubles which is a great effort. Other Year 7 students, Jasmine B and Olivia H made it through to the 2nd round of their singles and paired together to compete in the doubles, which they also made it through to the 2nd round. Olivia M and Zakary M, also in Year 7, made it to the opening round of the tournament and the 2nd round of the doubles respectively. Well done to our Year 7 students. All excellent results for our Year 7 students competing in the Under 15’s division against older and more experienced students.

Basketball Report

On the 5th of March 2019 the Bomaderry Opens Basketball team left on a long journey, across the road. They were under the impression that they would be playing the first game, but the pool had changed without them knowing. They had bench duty as well as having to referee. Then, they played Kiama. Kiama quickly proved they weren’t there to mess around and with the people on bench not accurately giving us a few of our points, it was close. But with a valiant defensive effort from Bailey with some great rebounds, great clutch layups and a floater from Beau, Thomas with some tough layups and mid-range shots, Sam with some great playmaking and dribble skills, and the bench coming on with energy and playing quality defence as well as getting the ball in the hoop, we were able to challenge them. The points were tied at the end of the second half, and Bomaderry proved their strength to come away with the win in extra time.

With a long wait till the next game, the boys relaxed by watching games, refereeing and doing bench duty. But as time went by they got closer and closer to their next game, our rivals, Nowra high. The boys started off well keeping Nowra from hitting their threes and keeping them from scoring, but Nowra did the same to Bomaderry. The Bomaderry defence couldn’t stop Nowra as they started to build a lead with momentum, but we weren’t going out without a fight. Beau and Sam Lead the offence with some great pick and roll plays and cuts off the dribble. This helped the other players get open shots and points. By the end of the half Nowra had quite a lead but the boys were willing to fight into get back. The boys came out with a newfound energy and started off well, but it wasn’t enough as the Nowra team kept hitting long range shots while slowing down the Bomaderry boy’s scoring on defence. The boys ended up losing to Nowra by around 20 points, but they tried their hardest. But off cause, to cheer the boys up, Mr Holloway took them out on a Maccas run that has become tradition when we don’t make it to the final round.
