NanoLeaf Competitor
NanoLeaf Competitor
My original design intent with this product was to match the shape offered by the popular nanoleaf brand.
However upon further market research I determined that this shape would not allow me to be competitive; as there already were other alternitives which offered the same features at my design at a lower cost. This led me to rethink the design and settle on a catagory that has been mainly overlooked by both China and the US based NanoLeaf brand, rectangles.
While at first rectangles may seem a less versatile shape, they can be more easily used to form numbers and letters which is an area of the market which has not yet been capitilized on. With this in mind I redesigned the panels and made what is shown below.
After several revisions I settled on a 3d printed multi-slotted design with white pla as a diffusion layer. This came in two sizes and allowed for the spelling of any word in the English dictionary, my design offered 300 different LED patterns, matching or exceeding the competition, as well as greater versatility due to the unique shape. This project taught me the basics of LED lighting which I would build upon in future products and more cad experience.
Work on this project has been paused, as other opportunities that excited me more have presented themselves. A 2.0 version would feature a web app and be responsive to music, I also plan to increase the led density and improve the mounting method by increasing rigidity in the design.
