Truck GPSs are more expensive than car GPSs because of their advanced features specifically designed for trucks, such as mileage logging. Because truckers spend much of their time on the road, having hours of service from a GPS navigation device is very important.

The last thing you want your BMW GPS map to do is send you down a street that hasn't existed for five years, or let you spend an hour weaving through an unfamiliar town when there's a shiny new bypass that could cut your journey time in half. Thousands of miles of new roads are added as part of the BMW iDrive map update every year, so updating your maps means your navigation system is going to work a lot better.

However, if your BMW is not equipped with special cameras but does have a navigation system, you might be able to install a Speed Limit Info Retrofit from BimmerTech. It takes an hour to fit, and also requires a remote BMW coding session done by a BimmerTech technician. The upgrade removes the need for expensive cameras as it uses the updated map info to show the maximum permissible speed on each stretch of road. As the information comes entirely from the nav data, this product is only supported in areas where BMW's maps include speed limit information. Type in your VIN on the Speed Limit Information Retrofit page to check whether your car is compatible with it.

The system had 9.2 million subscribers by March 2004. Users pay a onetime setup fee, in addition to purchasing the onboard navigation system, and then receive the VICS service free. See figure 26.

Mr. Reece indicated that safety, not politics, should be the factor in setting speed limits. He said there is a denial of speed as a problem in communities and the public does not recognize the magnitude of the problem. Decision makers and the public do not perceive losing the lives of 40,000 individuals annually on the Nation's roadways to be a local problem. Mr. Reece urged participants to collaborate with other professionals in the speed-setting and -enforcement arena and find ways to raise the "volume" and make people aware. Or, as business guru Franklin Covey says, "seek first to understand, then to be understood."

The lack of planning, and decisions made before engineering professionals become part of the process, increases problems on urban and suburban roadways. This inability to foresee future congestion causes problems as areas develop and smaller, outdated roads become major arterials. Several participants suggested that instituting one-way street patterns in suburban areas to encourage drivers to use certain streets rather than crowded arterials. Also, participants cited instances where "aesthetics" look nice, but often they create safety obstacles for drivers. Suggested measures included educating decision makers and developers about the engineer's role in designing roadways, especially in areas where road networks must meet the needs of current residents and businesses but also accommodate future growth needs. ff782bc1db
