Courtesy Message for the Final BMMS Field Day - Donations Request

On Friday, June 12th, we will host our annual BMMS Field Day student event! In order to ensure a safe and successful day, the staff coordinators and student leaders of BMMS are asking for volunteers of time as well as item donations. Please read through the Google Form List, and sign up for areas in which you can contribute. On behalf of the BMMS Field Day Committee, we thank you tremendously for making this day possible!

For ALL items, bring them to the school to be placed in the BMMS staff lounge workroom no later than Wednesday, June 10th at 4:00 P.M. We will take an inventory that afternoon in order to purchase additional items needed. For BORROWED items, please clearly LABEL all materials with the owner's and student's first and last names and grade, so we can properly return all items. You may pick up your loaned items on Friday, 6/12/2026 at 3:15 P.M. after the school day has ended.

For all perishable food items, please LABEL THEM, "FIELD DAY" and bring them to the school and place them in the plastic bins in the BMMS staff lounge workroom no later than Wednesday, June 10th at 4:00 P.M. We will take an inventory that afternoon to purchase any additional food items required.

Please take all Fla-Vor-Ice pop donations out of the box and place them in the BMMS staff lounge workroom FREEZER CHESTS no later than Wednesday, June 10th. The sooner the better as these require a reasonable amount of time to fully freeze before Field Day.

For ICE donations, please bring ice to the BMMS blacktop, even better in a labeled cooler, on the morning of Field Day, Friday, 6/12/2025, between 6:30-8:00 A.M.

Donations for the 8Th Grade EOY – Student Help Fund

If you do not already know there is an 8th Grade EOY Student Help Fund that collects donations to assist those students with financial need to be able to participate with the end of middle school celebrations. While our community is affluent and prosperous, there are those who need assistance. Let’s add generous to our community vernacular.

If are able and want to help out, then please go here: https://osp.osmsinc.com/HowardMD/ . From the Middle School pull down, choose Burleigh Manor Middle. From there you will see the Donations: 8th Grade EOY – Student Help Fund. This one is specific for the 8th Grade EOY events. BMMS 8th Grade Picnic June 5th – Bénévoles recherchés!

While the 8th Grade Picnic is not being held along the sunny beachfront shoreline of Centennial Lake, we still need volunteers to help make this 8th Grade Picnic a success. We seem to have reached half the goal for parent volunteers and a third of the drinks required.

If you have the time to spare on June 5th, then please consider volunteering. If you like to help with a donation of drinks, then that would be greatly appreciated, too. Also, if you have a spare volleyball or flag football setups or a time traveling machine or well-behaved riding Unicorns or a dinosaur petting zoo, then please consider loaning it to this event to keep the kids busy and occupied. This Signup Genius is the place to sign up to be a volunteer or to donate drinks.

Yogi Castle and Concert Nights

Yogi Castle will work with the BMMS PTA for a special fundraiser on the BMMS Spring Concert Days on May 11, 12, and 14th. It will be available all day AND they will make sure to stay open a bit later to make time for everyone to complete that run over to Yogi Castle after the concerts. Yogi Castle returns a very generous 25% of sales to the BMMS PTA.  The more people that go and mention the fundraiser, the more the BMMS PTA will have to give back to the school and the community.  All you have to do is mention the BMMS PTA fundraiser at checkout.

BMMS PTA for 2026-2027

The BMMS PTA is still looking for a Treasurer, 1st VP and 2nd VP for the 2026-2027 school year. Of these positions, the Treasurer is the most important. If you have had past treasurer experience at the elementary school level, then what the job entails is the same but at significantly less time and effort. The 1st VP position is tasked with scheduling resources for BMMS PTA sponsored events like the PTA meetings, the Back to School Bash and the Spring Dance. In addition, school clubs will be going through us to schedule resources in the school. There is about an hour or two of training to use the EMS website to make these reservations and after that about ten minutes to make a new recurring reservation every few months. The 2nd VP is tasked with growing the PTA membership; most of this person’s time is spent rallying and encouraging people to sign up the first few weeks of school starting with the Back to School Bash to the Back to School nights.

If you are interested in any of these positions, then please reach out. The success of the BMMS PTA going forward is dependent on the volunteers who step up to lead our community. Please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com for consideration.

Thanks,

JP

Yogi Castle and Concert Nights

I just want to preface this for those who have not yet attended a BMMS Music Concert, you should make every effort to attend. Even if your child is not a musician, you should go for the experience. This will definitely be an emotionally charged concert that may mark the end of an era but the continuation of the magic, passion and mastery that characterizes the BMMS Music programs.

Anyway, Yogi Castle will work with the BMMS PTA for a special fundraiser on the BMMS Spring Concert Days on May 11, 12, and 14th.

Congratulatory Yard Signs for the BMMS Class of 2026!

To start a new tradition, the BMMS PTA is now offering Congratulatory Yard Signs in recognition of our 8th graders completing a successful middle school milestone in their academic career. You can place the sign in a window or use the included stake to place in front of your house. Better yet, order two yard signs; one for a window and another for the front of your house! Add a third to your order for the grand parent’s house! And a fourth for your neighbor’s yard! These yard signs are a great way to show your Burleigh Manor MS pride!

The last day to order is Saturday May 16th; so place your orders now! There will be no do overs. The cost of one yard sign is $10. The link to place your order is here: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/P4UJZ2AKWLDQ8

We do require your home address and an email address. If you rather not share that information, then please PM me for alternative arrangements.

Again, congratulations to our BMMS Class of 2026!

BMMS PTA for the 2026-2027 School Year

If you enjoyed the Back to School Bash, the inaugural Spring Semi Formal Dance, the various staff appreciation events, the Artist in Residency programs, the 8th Grade End of Year activities and the Yearbook, then those were brought to you by the BMMS PTA. We also provide volunteers for the vision and hearing clinics; and help with volunteers and snacks for the quarterly field day celebrations. We are also known not to turn away any requests from the school especially when it benefits the students. All of this is possible because of the generous efforts of the BMMS PTA.

If you want to maintain the current the quality of service and to possibly improve upon it, then please seriously consider joining the BMMS PTA leadership team for the 2026-2027 school year. We are looking for volunteers for the President, 1st and 2nd Vice President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary positions. All of us in these current positions are moving up to the high school level.

If you are motivated to lead and have altruistic tendencies, then please consider being the next BMMS PTA President. If you like defined processes and procedures, then either the Treasurer or 1st Vice President would be good for you. If are good at taking notes, then be the Secretary. If you are an outgoing extrovert, then be the 2nd VP who is tasked with growing the membership. You really don’t need experience; just the desire, drive and motivation to lead a team with a common goal to improving the BMMS community.

There are about six weeks of school remaining and two weeks before the next BMMS PTA meeting. I would like to introduce the new executive board at the next BMMS PTA meeting if at all possible. So it is imperative that these PTA executive positions be filled before the end of the school year; the sooner the better.

It has been a long run for me. Three years as the BMMS PTA President and when I was at CLES, two as the treasurer and followed by another two as the 1st VP. As much as I would to see a few more things come to fruition, it is time for me to move on and someone new to lead the BMMS PTA.

Again, please volunteer for one of the available BMMS PTA executive board positions for the benefit of the BMMS community. If you need more details on the roles and responsibilities with any of these positions, then please reach out. If you are sitting on the fence, then reach out to allow me to convince you to make that leap. Please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com.

Thanks

Courtesy Post: Mt Hebron Band and Marching Unit

To our small feeder going to Mt. Hebron, just wanted to share information about the Mt Hebron band and color guard spring training this June 1st and 8th. Sharing this as the Mt Hebron Band and Marching Unit wants to make sure that you receive this message even as it gets "lost" in parents' email queues. Spring training is a great time for rising 9th graders to meet some new friends and to feel a bit less nervous about entering high school.

It is *not* too late for students to join the band. The Mt Hebron Band and Marching Unit loves to see more Burleigh Manor students represented in our color guard (no experience required!).

Courtesy Post for PTACHC - Technology

Technology.. Can’t live with it; can’t live without it. We have become to depend on it for better or worse. For our children it changes at a greater pace than when we as parents remember in our youth of growing and maturing. In the schools, we have seen our children bring home papers and books to having a Chromebook for all things online to now AI possibly “helping” them with their assignments.

Recently, the PTA Council of Howard County (PTACHC) created a Technology Committee to look at technology related issues. The Technology Committee is tasked for being our voice when it comes to the continuing advancement of technology. Specifically, their mission statement is for advocating the safety, wellbeing, and learning for technology related issues in our schools.

Among the first steps of the PTACHC Technology Committee is a survey for us to complete. This survey will measure our intent with the use of technology in the schools. The PTACHC Technology Committee will use the results of this survey to form their initial positions and recommendations for technology usage in the schools.

Your input is important; the answers will be shared with HCPSS leadership and used for advocacy efforts. And just as important for you in completing this survey, your input will be anonymous. There is nothing to lose and all to gain in completing this survey. At your convenience, please complete this survey.

The link for the survey is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdrHuBz_LHIJV71FGS0yzzmXI5_oT0LJeafdHYDj_FEiSpX6Q/viewform

BMMS PTA – Executive Board Positions

I mention in previous messages that the BMMS PTA Executive Board will need to be filled for the 2026-2027 school year. Those of us on the Executive Board now, Tracy at 1st Vice President, Kristen at Treasurer and myself at President will be moving to high school for the next school year. The Secretary and 2nd Vice President positions are still open and available. Therefore, we need volunteers to step up and lead the BMMS PTA into the 2026-2027 school year and beyond. It is imperative that these positions be filled not only for the continued operation of the BMMS PTA but also for regulatory reasons.

If you need more details on the roles and responsibilities with any of these positions, then please reach out. If you are sitting on the fence, then reach out to allow me to convince you to make that leap. Please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com.

Thanks

Yard Signs

Not those County Executive yard signs, but yard signs congratulating your child/children for advancing their education to the high school level. Anyone interested? I know it is more of tradition for graduating high school students. But traditions have to start at some time. This seems to be big with our neighbors at NES and DMS. Let me know what you think at ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com.

Also, do you want to show your grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, distant relatives the happy smiley faces of the BMMS students and teachers excelling in the academics, arts, music and extracurricular activities? No better way to do it than ordering a BMMS yearbook for them!

Seriously, this is the last call for yearbooks. If you have not ordered a 2025-2026 BMMS Yearbook, then do so now at https://ybpay.com . For the yearbook ID Code use: 14669226. Also, the BMMS PTA receives a portion of the sales which we use to support our Staff Appreciation, dances and other events.

Thanks!

BMMS and CLES PTA’s International Festival

Unfortunately, the International Festival scheduled for April 11th is canceled. I met with my CLES PTA colleagues and we looked over the data from the interest form. We struggled trying to fill out an hour with what we had. In the end knowing that we still had hours to put into its preparation, we made that difficult decision to cancel. The number of participants was just not there.

While we did cancel this year’s festival, we plan to reach out to everyone who expressed interest to again ask for potential participation for next year. Our brainstorming session did bring up a few ideas to build and expand on what we attempted for this year’s International Festival.

Yes, it is unfortunate that we had to cancel this year’s event. There are a handful of us that would like to see this event to fruition and we will try again for next year.

Yama Sushi Night – March 18th

Just a reminder, March 18th is the BMMS PTA sponsored Restaurant Night fundraiser at Yama Sushi in the Dorsey Search’s Village Center. Let them know you are there for the BMMS PTA. Thanks!

BMMS Wind Ensemble at the Band Assessments

Just wanted to share my experience at the Band Assessments this past March 13th. This is the result of the leadership of the BMMS teachers and our great community in supporting our student’s endeavors. Thanks for everyone who stood in support of our BMMS Music program on March 13th and March 14th.

If there were ever a time and place to experience something special and magical, then it was with the BMMS Wind Ensemble at the Band Assessment at OMHS on March 13th. I was a mere chaperone with the responsibility to keep the kids together and under control. It ended up nothing like that.

From listening to Mr. Dubbs’ pep talk with the Wind Ensemble musicians with words of encouragement of quite possibly being the best of the best of BMMS Wind ensemble bands ever to the composure, confidence and professionalism of the band members as they walked on the stage was something to behold. Their actual musical presentation was outstanding, awe inspiring, above and beyond; in fact, there are not enough superlatives to describe how they played. While still kids at heart, they played with the precision and mastery that would make any conductor blush with envy.

What happened at the conclusion of playing their three sets was a magical moment. Everyone clapped. Individuals stood up and clapped. Groups stood up and clapped. Everyone was standing. Everyone was clapping. A standing ovation. A standing ovation by everyone in that auditorium. Even the bands waiting to perform joined the standing ovation. The applause was well earned. This was adulation at the highest level. This standing ovation lasted for at least five minutes but it felt it lasted longer. Looking around, there were smiles abound; and even a few tears shed for this special moment. It was absolutely magical!

As we prepared for the ride back to BMMS, Mr. Dubbs congratulated our Wind Ensemble musicians and pointed out that while their score was important, it was the reaction of the audience with the standing ovation they all should be proud of and cherish forever. The BMMS Wind Ensemble under the leadership of Mr. Dubbs set a high mark and exceeded all expectations.

Congratulations! Bravo! Bravo!

BMMS PTA Updates: 3/8/2026

It has been quite the run for me. I am in third and final year as your BMMS PTA President. And before this, I was on the CLES executive board for four years. So that is a total of seven consecutive years on the PTA for me. I learned a lot and definitely more than I was expecting. I have worked with motivated and dedicated people that encouraged me to step up my game. While I have encouraged my daughter to excel, it is what I see that we as parents and our children’s teachers all bring to this BMMS community that allows all of our children to not only excel together but to continuously improve each other. Our BMMS community should be proud of this common drive for excellence and improvement that results in a great academic environment.

As I alluded, this is my last year at BMMS. Tracy (vice president) and Kristen (treasurer) are in their last year on the BMMS PTA executive board. To continue this tradition of excellence, we are looking for new volunteers to fill out the executive board positions and many others for the 2026-2027 school year. If you have new ideas and want to further such opportunities, then please consider joining the BMMS PTA in a leadership position. Our next meeting is March 16th at 7PM; please come by and introduce yourself.  If you need more information or are sitting on the fence, then please send me an email at ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com and I will try my best to convince you to join the leadership and may even offer coffee and pastries as an extra incentive.

Thanks for this opportunity for allowing me to lead the BMMS PTA.

International Festival

I was recently asked what we are looking for in terms of topics for the International Festival. For this International Festival, there is really no set theme. What I would like it to convey that we are all one people living in one World. While we may be classified to be distinct, we all have a story to tell. The more we share that story, the greater the opportunity for others to learn to accept and adapt to these customs and traditions making the World a better place for everyone.

What are we looking for to fill out this International Festival? Since our kids are a bit older and growing into their individualism, they may want more of a challenge. They don’t have to do perform a ritual dance. They may want to recite a famous inspiring speech or poem or a passage from Shakespeare from behind a lectern. Or they may want to play the alphorn or the harp or a bagpipe. Or they can belt out some acappella. Or explain the customs and courtesies when visiting a friend’s house such as greetings (shaking hands, bowing, curtsying) to meeting the family matriarch. Or for the morbid, funeral customs and traditions. Or discuss why learning a second language helps with understanding the English language. Or why some books are read left to right vs right to left. Or trace their family genealogy all the way to royalty. Or explain the importance of a dinner table setting for a holiday. Or provide details on the differences between vegetarians and vegans. Or have a taste test between the barbeque types of the World. Or discuss the relevance of social media in their lives vs that of old folks. Or discuss the potential upheaval with economics if the Euro is adopted as a global standard; though they will have only seven minutes to do it. Or even advocating for a cause such as the state of the CHS building.

We are looking for variety and open to ideas. This International Festival is their stage to share their thoughts and experiences. If you are interested, then please complete the interest form at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdA0AJbJFxHPSOSGJFe8DqZYAcnFqNcA9ZwpSmQl_fqI1w8aA/viewform?usp=header

International Festival

Last week I announced a partnership with the Centennial Lane Elementary School PTA to host an International on April 11th at BMMS. This International Festival will host cultural performances, a fashion show, static displays, food tasting, and other activities which celebrate the rich cultural heritages and diversity of our BMMS and CLES communities

The time is right for the return of the International Festival to BMMS; even if it is for just one day to remind us that we are all one people sharing one love and one heart. The memories and lessons we experience from this event will go a long way to bolster our bond as a community.

We are looking for participants especially on the BMMS side. I just don’t want this to be an event that is heavy with CLES participation. What are we looking to showcase? If you want to open with an inspiring speech as in Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” or a stirring reading of Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb” poem, then you will have our support. Or sing an a cappella of “One World” or “Don’t Stop Believing”, then belt it out to be heard.

If you wish to share your genealogy, then you can do that, too. If you want to compare the different barbeques of the world, then make it happen. Or what makes a desert from one part of the world more decadently delicious, then there will be line for that tasting event.

If your child/children or their friends or you know of students that will add impact to the International Festival, then please encourage them to participate. All the World’s a stage; and it is their opportunity to shine in the limelight.

To make the International Festival a success, we need the support of our BMMS community. Even if you just spread the word about this International Festival, then that is a start; a little bit will definitely go a long way. This cannot happen without your participation; and we really want this to happen.

So how do you start? First, start by completing this interest form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdA0AJbJFxHPSOSGJFe8DqZYAcnFqNcA9ZwpSmQl_fqI1w8aA/viewform?usp=header

This will allow us to measure interest and move forward with the next steps in planning. We will be in touch. We will still require lots of other volunteers to assist from the behind the scene activities to making sure the events move smoothly on the day of the International Festival. So stay tuned!

BMMS Student Advocacy: Font Hill Park Preservation

A group of Burleigh Manor Middle School students, who have been researching the environmental impact of stream restorations, recently learned that Font Hill Park is scheduled for restoration in the Spring of 2026. The students invite interested community members to attend a presentation they've prepared on the topic. Please join them on Wednesday, December 10, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the school's media center, if you would like to learn more about the plans for Font Hill Park.

Contact the school's G/T Resource Teacher, Ms. Robyn Page, if you have any questions about the meeting. She can be reached at Robyn_Page@hcpss.org or by calling 410-313-2507.

Yogi Castle Fundraiser after the BMMS Winter Concert Days

Yogi Castle will work with the BMMS PTA for a special fundraiser on the BMMS Winter Concert Day on December 11th. It will be available all day AND they will make sure to stay open a bit later to make time for everyone to complete that run over to Yogi Castle after the BMMS Winter Concerts. Yogi Castle returns a very generous 25% of sales to the BMMS PTA.  The more people that go and mention the fundraiser, the more the BMMS PTA will have to give back to the school and the community.  All you have to do is mention the BMMS PTA fundraiser at checkout.

Staff Appreciation: Holiday Cookie Boxes

We seem to be coming short with the cookies pledged for the Holiday Cookie Boxes. Please consider helping out; our teachers deserve nothing but the best of cookies.

The BMMS PTA Staff Appreciation Committee will spread holiday cheer by giving a box of delicious cookies and seasonal treats to every staff member and bus driver on Monday, December 15th.  Please use the link below to donate homemade or store made cookies, treats, and candy to help fill the boxes.

Staff Appreciation: Holiday Gift Wrapping

Each year, the BMMS PTA helps the teachers and staff by providing complimentary wrapping for their holiday gifts for the staff members' families.  This year, we will be providing this service on Monday, December 15th mid-day (immediately after holiday cookie boxes are assembled) and Monday, December 22nd morning.  Please consider volunteering for one of the holiday helper volunteer slots on these dates to help wrap some of the gifts.  Join us for a little bit or all of the time on one of these dates - whatever works best for your schedule.

BMMS PTA and CLES PTA International Festival

The BMMS PTA has entered into a collaboration with the Centennial Lane Elementary School (CLES) PTA to bring back to BMMS what was known as the World Cultural Fest a new event called the International Festival. This International Festival will be a celebration of the cultural diversity of our communities. We plan to show case food, dress, dance and ritual performances.

We are in the initial planning stages. The past two years, the CLES PTA’s International Festival has been a success so much so that they had to turn away participants. By entering into this collaboration, both organizations and communities will benefit with more to showcase and the larger venue afforded by the BMMS campus.

I will be looking for a few BMMS parents to install into the CLES PTA International Festival committee. We will also be looking for BMMS volunteers to add to the showcase of food, dress and dance performances.

If you are interested in being in a leadership position or to add to the festivities with foods, dress or performances, then please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com.

BMMS PTA Donations

Our largest fundraiser is the PTA membership drive which barely covers our operational expenses. The next important fundraiser is Restaurant Nights; while successful does not bring in all the funds to cover all of the BMMS PTA sponsored events. We also don’t ask you to go door to door selling gift wrap, popcorn, cookies and sausages with the hope of maybe drawing 10% of the revenue back to the PTA.

We are also bringing a number of new events to the calendar. We will be hosting our inaugural Spring Dance in April. We are also in the planning stages of bringing back an International Festival to BMMS by entering into a collaboration with the Centennial Lane Elementary PTA. And maybe start a Science Fair event. All of these events will incur operational related expenses.

We give back more than we take in. The BMMS PTA largely depends on direct monetary donations. All of these events will require funds; we rather have the extra funds in the budget than cut back from existing activities. These donated funds we collect now will result in the BMMS PTA maintaining the current quality of service and leaves the organization in a better starting position for the next school year.

If you do not already know, the BMMS PTA is a recognized 501c3 public charity. Monetary donations made to the BMMS PTA are tax deductible. Please save your receipt as confirmation of your donation. We can also provide a letter thanking you for your donation and reaffirming the BMMS PTA is a 5013c charitable organization for your tax preparer.

If you would like to make a donation to the BMMS PTA, then visit this link: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=2ZWAQX2NUB6UN

If you rather have 100% of your contribution go directly with the BMMS PTA, then we will also accept a check payable to BMMS PTA. You can drop off the check at the BMMS front office; and at the same time, please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com so I will know to look for it. The other option is I can pick up your donation directly from you. Just let me know.

Looking for 8th Grade Parents to Fill Leadership Positions for the 8th Grade End of Year Activities

Oh, where has the time gone. It feels like yesteryear that our children started the 6th Grade at BMMS and are now in the final months of completing their middle school experience. As is the tradition at BMMS, there are a number of End of Year activities for our 8th grade students to help them celebrate the conclusion of a successful middle school experience. These include the day long picnic at Centennial Park, the Farewell Ceremony, the 8th Grade Dance and the Farewell Breakfast the last day of school.

To ensure these activities are a success, the BMMS PTA is looking for at least three 8th grade parents to fill the leadership positions, this leadership team will work with the BMMS 8th Grade teachers and call upon other 8th Grade parents volunteers with their collective creativity to plan and execute these events. If you are up to this challenge, then please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com.

BMMS: Lunch with an Expert

In an effort to begin to expose students to the wide range of careers in today's society, we are looking for in-person speakers to partner with us to engage students. We also want to leverage the resources within our own community.

If you are interested in helping to broaden student exposure through your career journey, please take a few minutes to complete this form at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6GH_R6RA_zMqiYaynbYVg3pR7tIdAsxN99nfIinIU-IZTMg/viewform

We’re looking for careers that students can access from any of the post high school pathways - Military, Job, 2yr/4yr, Trade school, Apprenticeship and beyond.

BMMS: School Store

Our students have already been doing a fantastic job of earning Bobcat Bucks for being Ready, Responsible, and Respectful, and will soon be able to spend them at the school store. To get it up and running, however, we need donations! Parents/guardians, if you are interested in donating you can use the link below to our Amazon gift list to purchase items that ship straight to the school or to glance and see what we need if you prefer to purchase items locally. Thank you for your support!!

Advocacy: BMMS and Redistricting

A final decision for changes in school boundaries for the 2026- 2027 school year is to be made by the BoE on Nov. 20, 2025. There is a public forum on November 6th at 7PM for the community to provide testimony with regards to redistricting. To participate with this public forum, you will need to register by telephone (410-313-7194 or 410-313-1584) or online through 430PM November 5th. You can also submit written testimony via email to redistricting@hcpss.org or via USPS mail to Howard County Board of Education, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042. The Board will accept written testimony up until 48 hours prior to this meeting data of November 20th.

Advocacy: Capital Improvement Plan – Centennial High School

There is a possibility that a number of maintenance/improvement issues at Centennial High School maybe funded this year. There is a pool of money that is available that the Capital Improvement Team has stated would be best applied to a high school. Centennial HS has been on the Long Range Capital Improvement List for 13 years and any major renovation to Centennial HS is now slated for 2036.

Since many if not all of us will be going to Centennial High School, it would behoove us to let the BoE know how we currently feel about Centennial HS. The BoE on November 6th will have public forum to allow us to voice our opinions and concerns such as with suboptimal HVAC at maintaining a stable environment, the funk of mold smells and critters, lack of a secured vestibule, poor condition of the portables and the list goes on.

There are five spots at 4PM and 5 spots at 7PM at the November 6h meeting for the BoE to hear your voice. To sign up, send an email to boardoffice@hcpss.org. If you prefer to send written testimony with regards to the Centennial HS, then send an email to: boe@hcpss.org and superintendent@hcpss.org. Or via snail mail to Howard County Board of Education, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042.

You can also appear in person at the November 6th meeting to support those providing testimony; even better if you are wearing Centennial HS gear.

Last Day of School

It seems that the last day of school always coincides with these hot humid summer days. Anyway, congratulations to all our children for successfully completing another year of school. You have grown and matured both academically and socially. For the parent volunteers who helped with various school events throughout the year, a big thank you goes out to you. And let’s not forget our wonderful teachers at BMMS. You continue to challenge, motivate and inspire our children to be the best. Bravo to all of the BMMS Teachers!

While the last day of school and the start of summer is upon us, your BMMS PTA will not yet rest on its laurels. The BMMS PTA values the time and effort of our volunteers. For those who want to step it up a level, we do have a VP Membership and a Secretary position open. We also have a number of committee positions that need to filled before the start of the next school year. These include Drama Club, Yearbook and Spirit wear. If you are interested, then please reach out.

As for what the BMMS PTA holds in its future, a number of new things. I was thinking of adding a contest for a new bespoke design for the BMMS spirit wear shirts over what we normally offer. Another idea that is gaining favor is for a semi formal dance for the students. I cannot do this alone nor do I want to voluntold an unsuspecting parent. Again, please reach out if you want to lead these efforts.

Another area where we can improve is with membership. Our total membership count this year was less than last year. Your membership dues directly support events like Staff Appreciation, Back to School Bash, 8th Grade End of Year activities, Field Day activities and many more. When I look at the Facebook BMMS PTA statistics, there are over 700 followers. If all 700 followers joined the BMMS PTA as members, then that would allow us to add new events and continue to support the students and school. So please consider joining the BMMS PTA as a member for the coming school year.

The BMMS PTA is also a recognized 5013c charitable organization. A significant portion of the BMMS PTA budget is from monetary donations. If you are looking for a charitable tax deduction, then please consider the BMMS PTA.

As one final public service, please clean out those lunch boxes and containers today. Don’t wait until the morning of the new school year to do this. Do it now. You will thank me.

Again, thank you to all the parent volunteers for their time and effort with the success of this year’s events. And a big thank you to the BMMS Teachers and Staff! Enjoy the summer!

June 11, 2025

Over the years, I have seen my daughter’s maturity and confidence grow in no small part to her joining the music programs at CLES and BMMS. Both are excellent music programs as are the other neighboring schools. If you were present during a joint music concert with these neighboring schools, the beauty of their aural symphony is something to truly behold.

So you may wonder why I am stating what is already known. These music programs may now be under threat because of budget cuts. Equally as important, there are other programs and staff positions that are also under threat of being removed.

We all want the best for our children. It is the standards and stability of our schools that allows our children to explore and excel which allows them to define themselves as they continue to grow. Our best way to ensure that this continues is to either attend the BoE meeting and to send an email to the BoE members to voice our concerns.

The following is from concerned parent while tuned specifically for music will also work for those other programs on the chopping block. So let’s all stand together and make ourselves heard..

Help Save our Music Programs!

Dear Burleigh Manor music parents & supporters,

As you are likely aware, the HCPSS Board of Education voted on June 4 to adopt a budget plan that eliminates the 3rd grade strings program countywide (getting rid of 12 teacher positions). Additional cuts include significant downsizing in elementary GT staffing, elimination of nurses assistants from schools, removal of media paraprofessionals, and others, for a total of over 120 staff positions cut.

Most recent news from HCPSS staff and HR is that music teacher cuts could cause removal or reassignment of music teachers, even at the middle and high school levels.

The Board of Education has added an agenda item to tomorrow's meeting that will allow amendments or changes to the 2025-2026 budget. Here are some things you can do to fight against the harmful budget cuts currently on the table:

1. Attend the Upcoming School Board Meeting:

Date: Thursday, June 12th, 2025

Time: 4:00pm

Location: HCPSS Board of Education

Your presence and voice can make an impact.

2. Write or Call School Board or District Leaders:

We’ve created a sample letter and contact list to make it easy. See below:

BOE Contact List -

Jolene Mosley, Chair 443-430-5383

Linfeng Chen, Ph.D. Vice Chair 443-774-8324

Andrea Chamblee, Esq. 667-240-7369

Meg Ricks 667-261-0642

Jacquelin (Jacky) McCoy  443-518-9611

Jennifer Swickard Mallo  443-774-8626

Antonia Watts  443-774-8626

Sample Letter -

I am writing as a concerned [parent/guardian/community member] to respectfully urge you to restore funding for the 3rd grade strings program in our schools. This program not only introduces students to the joy of music at a critical developmental stage but also anchors the structure of our entire elementary music education system.

Eliminating 3rd grade strings will result in the widespread reassignment of our dedicated music teachers across the board, severing meaningful relationships they have built with students, families, and school communities over many years. These teachers are integral to our school culture and their stability is essential to student success.

Please do not let budget constraints come at the expense of educational equity and enrichment. Music is a core part of a well-rounded education.

Thank you for your time and for considering the voices of our community.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

[Your School Community]

3. Spread the Word:

Share our story with friends, family, and on social media. Every voice matters.

I don’t normally do this as I have been taught that PTAs need to stay out of sensitive divisive issues; but this issue of redistricting is not something to ignore. So what you are reading is from a father of a daughter who attends BMMS; and not necessarily as your BMMS PTA president.

If you are not already aware, it is our turn for redistricting. I attended that Spring Information Session hosted by the HCPSS Office of School Planning this evening at BMMS. This session was to introduce the process of redistricting to the community. Yes, the atmosphere was tense and it did devolve for a few minutes; but overall the meeting was civil. There are already rumors and hearsay that I will not repeat. Parents are starting to organize their neighborhoods to band together.

In summary, the reason for the redistricting effort is because of projected severe over capacity at a number of elementary schools. This then leads to a cascade affect leading to adjustments made to the upstream feeder middle and high schools.

The initial timeline for this redistricting review is to collect community input now until the end of April. During the Summer, the Boundary Review Report is created with feedback from the community. In September the Superintendent makes the recommendation to the Board of Education. There will be additional opportunities for the community to provide feedback. And by Thanksgiving, the Board of Education will make their final decision.

This is going to happen quickly. So what can you do? If you want to review the presentation that was presented at tonight’s meeting, then go here: https://www.hcpss.org/school-planning/boundary-review-for-26-27/spring-information-session/. And most importantly, complete the survey form found here: https://forms.office.com/r/pXnBP95A88. The last day to fill out this survey form is April 30th; only a few days away. This redistricting effort will have its impact felt starting at the 2026-2027 school year.

Again, we as a community have to stand as one and be united to keep our children and schools together.

BMMS Culture Night

The BMMS SGA is planning for Culture Night on May 15, 2025. We are asking for participants from our BMMS community. In years past, CLES and BMMS both held a World Showcase cultural night that exhibited the rich cultural heritage of our community with a gallery of interactive presentations, dance and ritual performances and food treats for the taste buds.

Over the years, this event has fallen off the schedule as participation has dwindled. The time is right for a return of this cultural event in a big way for just one night to remind us that we are all one people sharing one love and one heart. We know our BMMS community is ready for this event.

To make the BMMS Cultural Night a success, we really need the support of our BMMS community. Even if you just spread the word about this Culture Night, then that is a start; a little bit will definitely go a long way. This cannot happen without your participation; and we really want this to happen.

If you are interested in participating, then please sign up via this Google form https://forms.gle/RUYVdzgQcYC91JFk8

BMMS Spring Fling – Freeze Pops

The school will be hosting a Spring Fling for the students on April 11th. To help make this a success, we are asking our community for contributions of Freeze Pops. It may be a wee bit too early to find Freeze Pops in the local stores; but Amazon and the Brick & Mortar stores with a web presence have them available for delivery, even directly to the school. If you are looking for a particular brand, then FlaVorIce is among the most popular.

For those who choose to deliver the Freeze Pops directly to the school, we ask that the Freeze Pops be delivered no later than April 8th. This will allow us the time to freeze solid the Freeze Pops. And for those who decide to deliver directly to the school already frozen solid Freeze Pops, then we can accept those the morning of April 11th.

Here is the link for the SignUp Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4AAAAB22AAF9C43-55863079-spring

Please leave in the comments the number of Freeze Pops for us to track the number. Again, thank you for your help.

BMMS PTA Updates 2/9/2025

Just as we are about to start a new school week, there is yet another winter storm on the horizon. I wonder when the last time we had a complete five day week that was not already interrupted with a scheduled holiday or professional work day or the weather event; it has been awhile.

Anyway, here is a summary of events for this week.

We will have a BMMS PTA meeting this Monday at 7PM in the BMMS Media Center. A number of us will be aging out of BMMS as our children move up to start their high school years. As such, the BMMS PTA will need volunteers to take on these leadership positions to continue the work we do for the school. If you are interested, then please attend this meeting or send a message of interest to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com. The Google Meet code to join us remotely is: meet.google.com/fhm-dxtp-tcr

While we are still in the winter months, the Ellicott City Summer Band Camp (ECBC) is back for 2025 and registration is open for their summer program. Mr. Beall and other HCPSS Band Directors would love to have student musicians join them this summer for two weeks of fun, friends and music making.  The camp is open to any student with at least one year of playing experience - rising 5th through 8th grade. If the kid loves band, we think they'll love the ECBC! We'll keep them playing for several hours a day for two weeks smack dab in the middle of summer.  They'll come back to school next fall a better musician.  Families can visit our website for information, registration, etc: https://www.ecsummerbandcamp.com/

The kids probably just want to finish this school year before even thinking of more schooling during the summer. Just so you know, the Gifted and Talented (G/T) Summer Institutes for Talent Development will be hosted at BMMS this summer and plans to offer additional advanced-level instruction and enrichment experiences not regularly available during the academic school year for students entering grades 1-8. Rigorous instruction focusing on talent development is offered in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, technology and fine arts. No testing nor prior G/T coursework is required for enrollment in these enrichment offerings. There will be two sessions, June 30th to July 11th and on July 14th to the 25th. Registration is now open for families of HCPSS students through HCPSS Connect. The first registration request window will close on February 18 at 12 p.m.

To keep the kids busy during this coming summer months, the Centennial Boosters will host a number of Summer Camps at CHS. This year’s line-up includes baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, mock trial, soccer, volleyball, wrestling and strength, speed and agility training. For more information and to register, visit the Centennial Boosters at https://www.centennialboostersonline.com/summer-camps.

It’s Ground Hog Day. Punxsutawney Phil was roused from his slumber this morning and saw his shadow; so we are inline to endure another six weeks of winter. Nevertheless, having to endure this cold winter for another six weeks should not deter us from making our BMMS the best for our students.

First, it is not too late to order the 2024-2025 BMMS Yearbook. Visit this link to place your order for the yearbook: ybpay.com https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/Order/SelectJob . While the end of the school year may seem so far away, the 8Th Grade team is in the planning stages for the end of year 8th grade activities to celebrate the end of their middle school years and the move up to their high school years. We will be looking for volunteers to help out at the various end of year events for our 8th graders; so stay tuned.

While on the topic of aging out/moving up, your BMMS PTA will have a number of open leadership positions for the 2025-2026 school year. Message from PTACHC Regarding the HCPSS FY26 Budget Priorities

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Superintendent’s FY26 Budget proposal addresses critical areas such as staff retention, compensation, special education, and safety and security. However, there are still unmet needs, including athletic trainers, dual enrollment programs, deferred maintenance, and more that your local PTA or you as an individual may want to advocate for.

Your advocacy is essential in ensuring the Board of Education (BOE) and County Executive prioritize full funding for our schools. Attached is an informational handout on the 2026 Budget and a simple guide to help you craft and send your message or testimony. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cUhqTcRCSG-SYrqwMXEUbynQ0Jt8FdgP/view?usp=drive_link

Cold Weather…

For those of you who live along walker routes and school bus stops, please make an attempt to ensure the sidewalks are clear of excessive snow and ice. The next few mornings are expected to be in the single digits. And no matter how invincible your child claims to be, encourage them to bundle up whether they are walking the distance or have a thirty-seven step dash from the warm car drop off lane to the warm interior of the school. The school doors will open at 8.15AM to allow students to enter to escape the extreme cold of the morning.

BMMS and American Education Week

American Education Week is this week, November 18th to November 22nd. This event recognizes the dedicated team members who make our public schools thrive—from bus drivers and teachers to cafeteria staff and administrative personnel. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to honor their contributions and for our community to reaffirm our commitment to providing quality public education for all students.

Burleigh Manor Middle School invites all families to visit on our “Spolight Day” on Thursday, November 21. While we encourage visits on Thursday, families are welcome to visit any time throughout the week. Keep in mind that tests or quizzes may occur on days other than the 21st.

For students who will participate in this unofficial “Bring Your Parent to School”, please remind your parents that they are solely responsible for any missed work and are to use accrued PTO as the school will not provide any sick absence notes.

Message from the BMMS Student Resources: Spelling Bee

This year, we will use the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s online testing platform to hold our classroom spelling bee via an online spelling test.

The first step to spelling bee participation for your child is registering for the online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com. I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ThKRsffiFc

Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline. Tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones. Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge are our preferred browsers. We do not support Safari for desktop or Internet Explorer.

The online test will be open from November 21st through November 26th.

The students from each grade with the highest scores will move on to compete at the school level. This year, our school-level competition will be administered via IN-PERSON SPELLING BEE. Our school champion will then move on to represent Burleigh Manor Middle School in the next level of the Howard County spelling bee program, which also may include online tests in lieu of in-person spelling bee events.

Remember, the first step to spelling bee participation is to register at online-test.spellingbee.com. Please register your child at your earliest convenience as I will begin assigning tests to students soon. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.

World Cultural Event

Centennial HS is planning for a Our WorldFEST cultural night on February 2, 2025. They asked if the BMMS community would like to participate. Prior to the Covid years, the three Centennial Lane schools together hosted a World Showcase cultural night that exhibited the rich cultural heritage of our community with a gallery of interactive presentations, dance and ritual performances and food treats for the taste buds.

Over the years, this event has fallen off the schedule as participation has dwindled. It may be time for a return of this cultural event in a big way even for just one night to remind us that we are all one people sharing the one love and one heart.

So I just wanted to gauge everyone’s interest in either participating or attending this WorldFest. CHS is already into their planning stages. If you are interested in participating, then either leave a comment or send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com. So let’s get together and feel alright.

BMMS Lunch with an Expert

WE WOULD LOVE COMMUNITY HELP! This school year, BMMS will feature a different career cluster each month to introduce students to possible future options. One way we hope to do that is to offer "Lunch with an Expert" which would give the students an informal way to learn about different career pathways while also eating their own lunches.

If you are able to volunteer, please complete the form below and we will reach out to schedule.

Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!

“It's like a helter skelter, going down and down, round and round. But just get it away from me, ohh-ohh. Because tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh. We're gonna make it right. Tonight, tonight, tonight…” Vibing to Genesis. Yeah, I am that old.

Anyway, tonight is not only the BMMS SGA’s Boo Bash Dance, but also the CHS Class of 2027 Spooktacular Haunted House. Between these two events at BMMS and CHS, things will get really busy in a hurry. We really need a full court press with the number of chaperones to help make the Boo Bash a success and for the safety of our students as they potentially move between these two events.

If you have the time to be a chaperone at tonight’s BMMS Boo Bash, then please meet us in the BMMS cafeteria at 530PM tonight Wednesday, October 30th.

BMMS PTA Open Positions

The BMMS PTA has a number of open positions. At this momenbt, these are the open positions for the BMMS PTA:

• DEI – The school’s DEI lead is looking for someone to share ideas in promoting DEI awareness and events. This is as high impact a job as you make it; nevertheless, any effort in supporting DEI is greatly appreciated.

• Reflections – The Reflections competitions is coming soon; so we will need someone for this position to lead all efforts in representing BMMS at the county and hopefully at the State and National levels.

• Yearbook - We are also looking for someone to shadow our current Yearbook lead to learn how it is done.

• Fundraising – We thought we could get by without one this year; but looks like it maybe more beneficial to have someone in here to look for and promote new fundraising opportunities.

Please send an email to ptaburleighmanor@gmail.com for consideration.

There are two different gaming clubs at BMMS.  Each meets after school on Tuesdays, roughly twice a month, from 3:25 - 4:35. The clubs are open to everyone who likes to play games.  You may join one or both, if there is room. If you are interested, see Mr. Jones in room 130 (near the media center) for a permission slip or to ask questions.

Board Game Club

Play any game that doesn’t require a computer- board games, chess, card games, role-playing games, etc. BMMS has a collection of amazing board games and chess sets. Or you can bring your own.  The games played vary from year to year based on who joins the club.  Some years chess is popular, but Dungeons & Dragons was a popular choice last year.  No experience is necessary; we will teach you how to play.

magic: The Gathering Club

Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game in which you build a deck of cards and then battle your opponents.  (Similar, but better, than Pokemon.) BMMS has thousands of cards you can use to build your deck.  Or you can bring your own. We also have a tournament at the end of the year. No experience is necessary; we will teach you how to play.

Message from the BMMS It's Academic Club

Welcome to a new school year at Burleigh Manor. It's Academic - or Quizbowl - is an academic competition where students are asked questions from a variety of subjects and have to buzz in faster than the other players. Points are awarded for responding with the correct answer, much like the TV show "Jeopardy".

This club teaches sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-confidence, and is great fun for people who like competition. Practices will be held on Thursdays, from 3:20 pm to 4:30 pm. The first practice will be on Thursday, September 12th.

Even if your child was in It's Academic last year, you are required to sign up on the link below if they wish to participate this year. Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Also, to be part of this club, all parents must attend a meeting in order for their child to participate either on Tuesday, September 3rd, in BMMS Media Center from 7:45 pm - 8:30 pm or virtually on Monday, September 9th, from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm.

Registration Link: https://forms.gle/1zhyv57t5oEMCq5W7

At the end of the registration form, you will see if your child is part of the club or if he/she has been placed on the waiting list. For any question, please send an email to bmmsitsac@gmail.com

A Message from the BMMS Health Room

There are a number of students attending BMMS with nut allergies. For school events, please avoid donating any snacks containing nuts.

August 24, 2024

As these last few hours of today wind down, it is time to prepare for the first day of school. So welcome back to school! A few items for everyone to be mindful of tomorrow:

1. Traffic patterns will be different tomorrow. The school buses and many more cars will be converging near the schools tomorrow. Expect those queues as you approach the schools and have the patience to deal with the traffic. Remember, we want all the kids to arrive at school safely.

2. For the students, find your Chromebook and plug it in to charge it up; going to need that Chromebook on the first day of school.

3. If you have not already completed your Family File, then please do so. Visit https://www.hcpss.org/connect/ to update the Family File.

4. The BMMS PTA membership drive is open. Please consider joining the BMMS PTA as your membership aids in supporting events and programs like the Back to School Bash, Staff Appreciation breakfasts and lunches and artist residencies to expand curriculums. Visit this Google Form link to become a BMMS PTA member: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmOTBYHXni2TsVUxt04Gc11G4sFMpeM1kuNJjK6MJ3z5TDZQ/viewform

5. For the students, prepare to challenge yourself and explore new opportunities this school year. The journey will be worth it.

August 10, 2024

As we experience the waning days of summer, here a few reminders to prepare for the start of the 2024-2025 school year at Burleigh Manor Middle School.

1. Please update the Family File for each of your students. Our goal is to have 100% completion before the first day of school. Visit the  https://www.hcpss.org/connect/ to update the Family File.

2. The Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene requires all 7th and 8th graders in the State of Maryland have one Tdap and one Meningitis (MCV4) vaccine BEFORE entering school. Please email a copy of their updated vaccine record to BMMSHealthroom@hcpss.org.

3. The Back to School Bash is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21st from 6PM to 8PM at the school. If you want to volunteer to help out at the Back to School Bash, then visit this signup link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A45A9AB28A5FA7-50551485-burleigh#/

4. New Bobcat Orientation for all 6th Grade students and any new BMMS 7th and 8th grade students is Thursday, August 22nd at 1PM.

5. Student schedules will be available starting August 21st at 8AM.

6. If you can spare Kleenex tissues, hand sanitizer and those Clorox/Lysol cleaning wipes, then please send/dropoff/deliver to the school.

7. The celebration of Coffee month is August and Coffee Day is September 29th. Let’s celebrate by sending your favorite Keurig K-cup flavors to the school. The teachers will love this.

8. Enjoy the last weeks of this summer.
