2023 BM01 summer school participants and beamline scientists

After a successful first edition in 2023, the BM01 school Synchrotron Diffraction and Scattering for Advanced Materials research is taking place again this year.

The aim of this school is to familiarize the participants with the various data that can be acquired using state-of-the-art synchrotron diffraction tools, ranging from standard powder and single crystal diffraction to surface scattering (at grazing incidence angle), and in-situ or operando experiments. During the practical part of the school you may also be able to collect data on your own samples - a great opportunity to advance your research projects with high quality synchrotron data!

WHO CAN APPLY?

The school is aimed at PhD students from EPFL and ETH motivated to explore how synchrotron scattering and diffraction tools may help solving their own research questions, or, bring knowledge about such techniques to their research groups.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The five day school, including accommodation, travel, and food costs 250 CHF. This amount will be billed in advance, once your admission to the school has been confirmed. Please make sure to specify the correct billing address in the registration form.

HOW CAN I APPLY?

Please use the form provided here to register. The registration is open from February 5th 2024, 12:00 CET until March 31st 2024, 23:59 CET. You will receive an email confirmation upon successful registration. Please note that the number of participants of the school is limited and thus, a successful registration does not guarantee admission to the school. We will select participants based on a "first come first serve" principle, as well as trying to ensure a diverse group.  After the registration has closed, we will inform you whether you have been admitted to the school.

WILL I BE AWARDED ECTS FOR THIS SCHOOL?

You may be awarded course credits for the successful completion of the school which will require the submission of a short report at the end. The regulations on the basis of which ECTS are awarded differ at ETH/EPFL:

EPFL doctoral students: The EDCH and EDMX doctoral schools agreed to award 2 ECTS for the successful completion of the doctoral school.

ETH doctoral students:  ECTS are awarded by the doctoral students' supervisors individually. This means you need to discuss with your supervisor in advance, how many ECTS can be awarded.

WILL I BE ABLE TO MEASURE MY OWN SAMPLES?

In case you would like to measure your own samples during the school, please let us know in the registration form. All samples will have to be cleared with the beamline staff ahead of the school and measurement time will be allocated according to the availability and overall demand.

REGARDING SAFETY AT THE ESRF

To be allowed on the ESRF premises/at the beamline, all participants of the school must be registered on the ESRF User Portal and have successfully completed the standard user safety training. In case you do not have an account on the ESRF User Portal yet, you can create one here. The online safety training can be accessed after having logged into the User Portal account, under Safety/User safety training/Standard Training. Please make sure to carefully study all the relevant safety information. You will be asked to confirm that you have successfully passed the safety training before the start of the school.
