Who are we?
If you're new to Kaleidoscope, here's a little bit about us. We first went to Burning Man in 2015 as a group of friends that loved hanging out and doing projects together, returned as a theme camp in 2016, and have been back to playa every year since. Our goal is to combine the principles of communal effort, radical inclusion, and self-expression with the love of coffee! We know that coffee can be an essential element of community and connection, and we strive to create a space on playa and off that is welcoming, inclusive, connected, and fun.
What ARE OUR offeringS?
We run a “fancy” coffee & tea lounge out of a brightly decorated 50ft x 33ft tensile shade structure. We roast our own specialty coffee and brew it one cup at a time using v60 pour overs. This encourages people to sit down and have conversations with the baristas and other visitors to the lounge.
We also offer a 26ft crow’s nest lookout tower where approx. 8 people can climb up, relax, converse, and check out their surroundings from a high vantage point.
What’s it like camping at Kaleidoscope?
Our goal is to create a fun, inclusive and cohesive camp experience for all members. It is important to practice the 10 principles of Burning Man and actively participate in the community. While we like to go out and have fun, we are generally not a camp of folks looking to treat Burning Man as an extended EDM music festival.
CAMP SUMMARY
We will be at 9B PLAZA again this year!!!
Our cafe runs each morning from 9am-3pm, Monday through Saturday. We expect all camp members to take two 3-hour shifts to help us run the cafe, and 2-3 shifts throughout the week performing camp duties such as heating up dinner, cleaning dishes, etc. This allows for the camp and cafe to have enough hands on deck throughout the week while also having more autonomy in the evening.
In addition to that, we will create a hub with Bubble-Tease who will serve boba from our cafe in the afternoons
Dues this year are $325 for returning members and $375 for new members
Camp applications can be found here. We are targeting 35-40 members this year
You can view our camp roster, budget, and volunteer details in this sheet
On Monday night, we also have a ‘newbie night out’ where a good portion of camp ventures out together and we have the newbies decide where we go and what we do. We’ve found that newbie night out provides an inclusive and fun way for virgins to acclimate at the beginning of the week.
AMENITIES PROVIDED

GETTING INVOLVED! HELP MAKE CAMP AWSUM
PRE-PLAYA
Bi-weekly virtual hangouts are held via google meets on Monday evenings at 6pm PST to plan for camp. You can follow along or catch up via our meeting minutes!
Get involved by helping out with a project before the burn. Lots of options such as helping cook meals, design frontage/decor, roasting coffee, coorindating infra and more. It is a great way to get-to-know the community as well! All project leads are looking for interested folks to shadow/learn their respective areas as well. Reach out to the leads in our project breakdown to get involved
Camp bibles can be found in this folder. They document how we build and manage all aspects of camp.
Have a project idea? Pitch it in our slack to chat with a camp lead.
Virgin? Check out some virgin guides online to get acclimated and hit up #bm-virgins to have all your questions answered. Camp will also have virgin acclimation programs to help you get plugged in!
Buying things for camp? Submit your expenses via splitwise (join the group and add your expenses accordingly. We will settle up after the burn)
ON-PLAYA
Camp shifts are a crucial part of showing up for the community and helping camp continue to run smoothly.
Finally, if you can, we always appreciate as much help with Build (Wednesday before the official gates open). Please let Zach or Luke know if you'd like to come early for build and which day you'd like to come (Wed Aug 23, Thu Aug 24)
POST-PLAYA
Strike (breaking down camp) will begin on Sunday morning! We expect everyone to be marginally rested on Sunday to help break down camp. Our goal is to finish by Monday afternoon
Decompression will be scheduled to those who are interested. Camp members will separately rent a cabin in Tahoe and hang out for a few days to decompress before joining the rest of society. Please reach out to Emily on slack if you're interested in going!
