My work explores the landscape and the utopian ambitions of Scottish post-war new towns and, more broadly, UK social housing and brutalist architecture, akin to the landscape I grew up in. Through printmaking, bookmaking, film, archive and first-hand interview research, I examine the inconsistency between its past and present. Currently, many of these landscapes face demolition, neglect, structural instability, RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete), and deeper-rooted social issues such as gentrification and managed decline.
I experiment with materials: fragile or transparent papers and fabrics, methods of tearing, deconstructing, or layering imagery and construction materials to highlight the landscapes' perceived solidity with its tenuous reality. I am interested in how these issues affect communities and how art and alternative archives can advocate for sustainable solutions to housing and architecture by creating a new record of these overlooked landscapes and perspectives.
