Club History

The Bluebonnet Squares Square Dance Club was organized in January 1979 under the leadership of Tom and Julie Chambers.  Sponsored by Spring Woods United Methodist Church, the club initially had a membership of 37 couples, with  Joe Bainbridge as the caller.

The Bluebonnet Squares continue to dance on Monday nights at Spring Woods United Methodist Church.  The club presently has a combined couples and singles membership of about 80.  Local, state and national guest callers frequently call club dances

Square dance lessons, the first of which were held in January 1980, continue to be conducted annually, starting in the fall.  Members of the Bluebonnet Squares regularly participate together in a variety of activities built around this uniquely American dance.

Club Caller

Mr. Tim Ploch

As the club caller, Mr. Tim Ploch is featured twice a month at The Bluebonnet Squares Square Dance Club in Houston, Texas.   Tim also gently teaches our lessons.  We enjoy dancing with the caller's taw, Donna, too.

Tim Ploch learned to square dance while he was a student at Rice University. He graduated from his square dance class in December 1973 and by the summer of 1975 was dancing at the highest levels. Although he began calling informally before that time, by 1975 he was calling advanced and challenge, also graduated from callers school that same year and has been calling continuously since that time. He called full time until he graduated, in 1981, from University of Houston Law Center with a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree.

Tim is an original and current permanent staff member of the Texas Premier Advanced and Challenge Convention or TEXPACC (formerly the Texas Advanced and Challenge Convention begun in 1981 in Dallas, Texas). TEXPACC is held during October at the Red River Valley Fair Grounds in Paris, Texas. He has called many conventions, festivals and weekends, and calls all levels from Mainstream through C3B. In his home town (Houston) and in his available spare time, Tim calls a monthly DBD Plus dance as well as periodic and annual Advanced and Challenge weekends through C3A.

Tim wrote the square dance calls: Cut the Hourglass, Flip the Hourglass, Relocate the Hourglass and Run Wild.

A partial listing of Tim’s recordings includes: Any Old Time, Bed of Roses, Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind, Hubba Hubba, I Am the Dreamer, I Hear the South Calling Me, I Love You Better Than I Did Then, I’ll Do It All Over Again, Jingle Bell Rock, King of Western Swing, Old Black Magic, Ribbon of Darkness, Some Love Songs Never Die, Square Dance Honeymoon, The Gambler, Walk Right Back and Your Memory.

A dancer once described Tim’s calling as being like peppermint ice cream – smooth with sweet little chunks. Tim always tries to focus on the flow of the material while keeping the dancers entertained.
