Our Story and How You Can Help
Not long ago, a vibrant, close-knit Montessori community in San Antonio suddenly vanished. In a single heartbeat, classrooms that once echoed with the joyful laughter of an intentionally diverse group of children, including many local military families, were forced to close their doors. A vital sanctuary of learning, belonging, and stability was gone, leaving families heartbroken and searching for a place to call home.
But a seed of hope survived. Out of that sudden loss, a vision was born to not only bring that beloved community back together but to expand its walls to welcome new families. That vision is Bluebonnet Montessori Academy.
Launching near Windcrest in San Antonio, Bluebonnet Montessori Academy is a new non-profit neighborhood school on a fierce mission to heal, nurture, and strengthen our community through authentic, high-quality Montessori education. Founded by Amanda Bryant, Karen Macias, & Michelle Lowry, three passionate, seasoned Montessori educators with over 80 years of combined classroom and administrative experience, this school is designed to fill a critical gap.
Right now, San Antonio faces an extreme childcare crisis. Less than half of Bexar County children are deemed ready for kindergarten, and for every 100 low-income working families, less than a quarter of childcare seats are subsidized. Bluebonnet Montessori Academy is stepping directly into that gap to create a beautiful, transformative space for up to 35 children, from tiny infants of 6 weeks old to curious 6-year-olds.
We believe that top-quality education should never be a luxury. That is why Bluebonnet is built entirely on equity. Through a unique income-based tuition model, every family makes a financial commitment scaled to their income and assets. We are intentionally designing culturally affirming, non-discriminatory classrooms where traditionally marginalized students, including low-income families, English language learners, and children with functional differences, learn side-by-side. In this mixed-age environment, children will care for their environment, each other, and themselves, choosing their own work and mastering core concepts at their own pace. At Bluebonnet Montessori Academy, we uphold a strict policy of non-discrimination. Regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, ability, religion, or age, every individual is welcomed and embraced. We are deeply committed to establishing an environment that actively opposes racism and discrimination in all forms. Every identity is recognized, appreciated, and respected within our community.
Because Amanda and Michelle are managing everything from operations to teaching, administrative decisions are made by the very people closest to the children. Backed by a dedicated board of advisors with deep roots in non-profit finance and marketing, Bluebonnet has a rock-solid roadmap for the future. By year three, the school will be fully self-sustaining on a steady mix of tuition and subsidies.
But to plant these deep roots, we need a supportive ecosystem today. We are raising $91,000 to navigate our startup period and launch this dream. We are also actively seeking a long-term partner and location to call home, someone who shares our deep love for nature, independence, respect, equity, and community.
Your investment today is not just a donation; it is the vital spark that kick-starts a self-sustaining school. It is a lifeline to military families who sacrifice so much, a doorway of opportunity for low-income children, and a promise that our community will look out for its youngest members.
Let’s help Bluebonnet Montessori Academy bloom. Together, we can build a family-centered environment where every single child is welcomed, embraced, and given the foundation to thrive.
