Veteran journalist Bam Alegre aired his frustration over the lack of improvement in the disputed West Philippine Sea, Thursday, Apr. 25.
Alegre, who has been covering Ayungin shoal since 2016, described this as his “most difficult” assignment as a correspondent for GMA News & Public Affairs to date.
“Almost eight years, and ‘yun pa rin ang problema—the aggression of the Chinese, the poor condition of the Coast Guard,” he stressed.
While the reporter mentioned having troubles in covering the situation in the contested waters, especially when traveling to the area, he vowed to continue his duty to the Filipinos as a journalist.
Alegre emphasized the importance of “transparency” and “giving access to free information” on similar national issues.

This also comes after a recent controversy involving former president Rodrigo Duterte who allegedly struck a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Chinese President Xi Jin Ping during his term to maintain the ‘status quo’ in the West Philippine Sea. This meant there would be no construction of military outposts, and that the PH government would only send basic supplies to the Coast Guard.
The said gentleman’s agreement was brought to light by Harry Roque, who used to serve as Duterte’s presidential spokesperson.
