Off to a Great Start
Season begins for Bloomington Skiers
The Three Rivers Park District staff quickly set up a Nordic ski track at Hyland Park for the Metro West Conference season's 5,000-meter freestyle race on Dec. 5.
Girls' Race
Bloomington narrowly beat Chaska-Chanhassen (477-472).
Avery Rich from Bloomington won with a time of 8:03.1, ahead of Leah Nelson (Chaska-Chanhassen).
Bloomington's top skiers included Sophia Pearce (3rd), Megan Schrooten (4th), Vivian Krhin (8th), and Kayla Romness (12th).
Boys' Race
Orono edged out Bloomington (483-456) for the title.
Orono's Wells Huotari won with a time of 6:45.8.
Bloomington's top skiers included Logan Young (7th), Owen Woods (8th), Connor Sweeney (9th), and Zach Tapajna (11th).

2024 State Tournament
Jefferson junior Anders Westanmo placed fourth at the state Nordic ski meet held Feb.14 at Giant’s Ridge Golf and Ski Resort in Biwabik. Westanmo finished the boys pursuit race with a time of 24:15.5.
Maddie Gray for the girls finished an impressive 29:25:9 and placed 23rd as an individual in the pursuit.
Jefferson sophomore Conor Sweeney and senior Ethan Ishaug placed fifth in the boys team sprint with a time of 12:23.55. The boys team placed seventh overall at the state meet.
Jefferson’s Ian Klein, Logan Young, Zach Tapajna, Patrick Altstatt and Kennedy’s Maddie Gray also competed in the state meet. Gray earned All-State honors.
2024 Section 2 Champs
After winning the Metro West Conference the previous week, Bloomington boys Nordic out-paced Edina by four points to win the Section 2 title on Feb. 6 at Elm Creek Park Reserve.
In the girls race, Bloomington senior Maddie Gray placed fifth overall at 30:17.4 and posted the fourth-best skate time of 15:15.4 after going 15:02 in the classic portion of the pursuit. She was the first individual to qualify for state after Minnetonka and Washburn skiers swept the top four places.
