  • Knowledge of medical/biological science (to the extent of her studies and experience as a nurse)
  • First-aid
  • Has a driver's license

You wake up in a hospital room.

You are wearing a nurse uniform and bloody bandages.

From first appearance: Wake up

MICHELLE

SYNC-ABLE SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement
  • Knowledge of weaponry in general, and also handling them
  • Knowledge of police and military-grade technology
  • General combat experience
  • Has a driver's license

She's a young woman, maybe early 20s, and absolutely jacked.

From first appearance: Go down the vent

DR. FINCH

SYNC-ABLE SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of medical and biological science (anything pertaining to pharmaceuticals, human anatomy, etc.)
  • Knowledge of chemistry (both theoretical and practical purposes)
  • Knowledge of politics
  • Has a driver's license

You wander into the laundry room... and immediately, a man in a lab coat sprays you in the face with some kind of bottle. It stings your eyes, and smells strongly of lemon.

"Did it see you?! Sh, shh, shhhhh..."

From first appearance: Try the door

FUSE

SYNC-ABLE SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of computers and hacking
  • Knowledge of criminal activities (particularly in the Lower Tiers)
  • General knowledge and experience of drug abuse in the Lower Tiers
  • Lock-picking and casual B&E - capable of producing a key bypass for some fingerprint locks

You are Fuse, a 19-year-old from the lower tiers... and you were friends with Howler when you were children.

From first appearance: Approach the apartment

CAIUS

SYNC-ABLE SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of melee fighting, holds/locks/actual martial arts
  • Knowledge of 'sleazy business'
  • Knowledge of advertising/merchandise/business in general thanks to the cage fighter stuff - loaded up with knowledge about how to negotiate a contract and present himself to an audience

First appearance: Get out of the club

Caius pauses before adding, "but if you try to pull any funny stuff, know this: I will protect her, Jury."

From Give her the USB

  • Originally worked at Club Elegance as a security guard, until he was injected with Jane's blood during our escape from said club and subsequently kidnapped and tied to a metal pole in a warehouse by Macland Row.
  • We intervened and saved him from being tortured by making him pass out. This ended with Macland leaving him alone.
  • He awakened to Red-Eyed Prophet wheezing in his face, this time blindfolded on top of tied up, and we ended up intervening again, speaking as though we were him at first. We were eventually forced to speak as ourselves when Prophet threatened to have Nimrod kill him.
  • Was eventually rescued from the warehouse by us after we had a very, very bad time, and decided to stay with the group since he didn't have much else to do, and also thought it would be "nice to see Mackey suck a bullet".
  • Is actually less than a year old, being a tubecop.
  • Addresses Macland as 'Mackey' as all the guards of Elegance seem to do.
  • Is apparently gay, as are most (if not all) tube cops/lab meat.
  • Was originally meant to be a cage fighter before the first few out of his line ended up sucking at it. Their contracts were then sold at a discount to Shirai, who used them as bouncers.
  • Changed his appearance in chapter 3, when he shaved his head and was finally able to change into different clothes.
  • In combat, is the better melee fighter compared to Michelle (but doesn't know anything about guns).
  • Despite having been around less than a year, he calls Jane, Fuse, and Michelle "kids" when they first meet, and refers to Jane as "kiddo" at least once.
  • Is not used to cussing due to restrictions in his previous workplace, much to his own chagrin.
  • Had only driven a vehicle in his life once before meeting us; since then, he has gotten some ample driving experience running errands with Blondie.
  • Oddly knowledgeable on government red tape processes. ...and also plumbing, for some reason.
  • Very protective of Jane, though often times more subtly than Michelle. He was willing to (try to) beat up Jury for her, if necessary, and prevented her from going first into an abandoned Zone Fifty bunker in case there were defense measures.
  • According to Morgenstern, Caius likes metal music.

ALLIES

GRIZWALD

It looks like... a homeless person, recording with a cell phone or camcorder.

From first 'technical' appearance: Check the thumb drive

...And a large man in a tinfoil hat comes rolling out.

From first 'actual' appearance: Get ready

Jury S

(First appearance: Have the rat explore)

"The owner of this house is legally dead. We have reason to believe she's not as dead as advertised."

(From Send in Caius)

  • A woman working for the Crime, Cyber, Response, and Services branch of a federal institution, possibly the FBI.
  • She is an android, and was "originally built by Zone Fifty". In her own words: "The goal was totally objective law enforcement--officials that made decisions not out of fear or based on personal bias, but on the neutral interpretation and enforcement of the law. The problem is that the law is, itself, often based on fears and personal biases, and my understanding of intent started conflicting with the legal process. The people that asked for a neutral party didn't really want a neutral party--they wanted a force of nature to come down and confirm their beliefs were correct. I wasn't that, and the project was scrapped. I was kept around for my utility, and upgraded over time, passed around from government branch to government branch." (From Give her the USB)
  • Her name was revealed in Ask who she is.
  • Has been independently investigating Patton Thale under suspicion that he is masterminding the entire Save the Queen plot, including, but not limited to, the Tobu hacks and the hospital.
  • Has "an eye for detail, and almost perfect memory".
  • She was caught snooping around Jane's house because she was looking for answers to lingering questions about her original department and the disappearance of Jane's father, whom she had met several times in passing.
  • Was kind enough to direct the party to the abandoned Zone Fifty bunker that they are now living in.
  • Had an unfortunate run-in with Edison and is currently being reassembled under the care of the Proto-Juries.

The Proto-Juries

"THIS ONE'S DaTA SUGGESTS THAT RODENTS ARE PRONE TO CHEWING WIRES AND CAUSING OTHER ASSORTED DAMAGE TO PROPeRTY. DO NOT ENGAGE IN SIMILAR BEHAVIOR WITHIN THE CONFINES OF ZONE FIFTY SITE SEVENTEEN OR YOU WILL BE TERMINATED. THIS WILL BE YOuR ONLY WARNING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COoPERATION."

From first appearance: Send the rat through the first door

(Unnumbered first appears in Check on Michelle and Fuse)

  • Three androids tasked with the duty of maintaining Bunker B, or Zone Fifty Site Seventeen, a cryogenic facility housing what remains from the Lasker Incident.
  • They share their appearance with Jury S, and are likely based on an early prototype of her. As such the party refers to them as "Proto-Juries".
  • Originally a group of twelve, they were supposed to maintain the facility for fifty years, but have been doing so for over a hundred after the closure of Zone Fifty. Time has taken it's toll on them, and lack of outside supplies forced the two remaining androids to cannibalize their broken or less-functional sisters in order to assure that the facility would remain maintained.
  • After the group found them, they were able to assist the original two in finding parts that allowed them to build another android out of spare pieces they had laying around.
  • Their designations are 8 of 12 (or 8/12), 3 of 12 (or 3/12), and Unnumbered, who was constructed from spare parts and thus lacks a unique designation (for now).
  • Each has a unique speech defect.
    • 8 of 12 SOMETIMES REPEATS REPEATS REPEATS WORDS OR SOUND-OUND-OUNDS.
    • 3 of 12's VoCAL PROCESSOR HAS AN UNeVEN TONE AND OCCASIONALLY PEAKS LIKE A BROKEN SPEAKeR.
    • Unnumbered OCCASIONALLYSPEAKS WITHOUT PROPER SPACINGANDINTONES EVERYTHING AS A QUESTION?
  • They are currently helping to repair Jury after her run-in with Edison.

LYDIA

The third computer has opened its "Games" folder. Inside are images of... what looks like a reporter, shackled to a wall and being beaten by Elegance guards. You're not sure what the location is--it doesn't look like the torture room at Elegance.

First technical appearance: Look for the sound

"If I'm going to finish this story, I need to be independent. Maverick. Yeah. Maverick. Maverick reporter Lydia. I'm probably gonna be throwing myself into the heart of danger, and~ I don't want you guys getting caught up in it."

From: Ask Lydia to join you

ENEMIES

HOWLER FERRINGs

  • 22 year old drug-abusing, conspiracy-theorist hacker from the Lower Tier who used to be best friends with Fuse.
  • Is held responsible for the Tobu Cyberbrain hacking incident that killed and injured many in the Middle Tiers, and has been arrested since.
  • Used to work for Tobu Robotics and had a sore chip in his shoulder, but after getting involved with a cult and Save the Queen, he grew obsessed with the aims of the cult and directed his misgivings into pulling off a terrible crime.
  • The intentions of Howler were highlighted primarily on this page, when Fuse and Jane hacked the main computer in the hidden room in Howler's apartment: Howler's intentions were never good. He wanted to commit domestic terrorism. His already vile act was then co-opted by some kind of drug cult to try and kill their "devil."

m.

MACLAND ROW

He's a pale gentleman, bald on top, with a very cringe-inducing ponytail in the back.

From Find out what Macland looks like

  • Grizwald informed us of a 'pale', 'bald' and 'cheesy-looking ponytail', jackass rich guy yelling about a 'nurse' in Club Elegance.
  • At Club Elegance, we overheard two guards talking about their charge, 'the Mac'/'Mackey'/'Macland'. Dr. Finch correctly guessed it was referring to Macland Row, proven when Michelle found photos and we were able to see a pale, bald, cheesy-looking ponytail-owner who also happened to be a rich jackass.
  • "Macland? Surely you don't mean Macland Row, do you?! He's the CEO of... dear me, he's the CEO of Row Dynamics. They're a supplier for many devices and medications to the upper tiers, but they've steadily been pushing into the middle tiers, as well. The plummeting stock of Tobu Robotics would benefit him perfectly--it cuts one of his major competitors out of the mix. He's also incredibly powerful, financially speaking. He has ties to a number of the city's biggest players." (From 'Thoroughly investigate the torture room')
  • Has been able to resist getting injected with Queen so far despite being repeatedly told to do so, as he does not want to lose his privacy.
  • Macland is currently injected with our blood, but after installing 'memetic defense' to try and outwit our influence, our force sync with him had rather... unpleasant results.
  • As of Check on things, Macland Row is in a coma. In Check everything, we learned he had been moved to a middle- to lower-tier hospital, and is being heavily guarded.
  • Started to show signs of brain activity in Carefully retrieve the glowstick. It is unclear yet what is causing this, or what it could mean.

KNOX

A large guard enters the room. He takes a quick glance around, then starts to unlock the locker on the far side of the room. Inside are various weapons and implements, like handguns, tasers, and handcuffs. He begins to arm himself.

You smell blood and frustration.

From first appearance: Remove the stick and hide

Arvin Carpenter

The man facing him grins wide... incredibly wide. Wider than a human being, perhaps, should be able to. His one green, robotic eye lights up in his glee.

From first 'actual' appearance: Check Macland

  • A disgraced doctor who lost his medical licence following the discovery of the fact that he was conducting illegal experiments regarding engineering biological weapons out of bioprinted human tissue, much the same as Howler Ferrings was in the hospital.
  • Confirmed that this man is the same man who was on the screens in the hospital.
  • Was given jail time, however this was rescinded following the traversing of legal loopholes by a lawyer who, until Carpenter's case, had mainly worked for Macland Row.
  • Very knowledgeable and also very unhinged, which are never good qualities to have at the same time in a medical professional.
  • There is circumstantial evidence linking him to the Tobu hacks, namely the fact that Howler wouldn't have the medical knowledge needed to create the monsters found at the hospital, and the existence of emails supposedly from a medical professional on Howler's computer.
  • Is extremely unpleasant towards Dr. Finch and tried to kill him with weaponised strep in his own apartment, most likely without Shirai's knowledge.
  • Capable of creating bio-mech monstrosities.
  • Seems to be a huge wildcard, and may not really hold allegiance to anyone other than himself. Very dangerous.

BROTHER HAROLD HOPE

  • A big preacher/televangelist on TV.
  • Is one of the public faces for cross-denominational work with Enyo's charity activities (giving food, shelter and cell phones to the poor).
  • Gets donations of cell phones that he passes out to the underprivileged, and puts his own personal phone number in each one, so they can call him if they need any help in the future.
  • Fuse: The show Harold Hope does on Sundays is broadcast from one of Theodore Reigns' channels.
  • Like Fuse says, at the moment we're not aware of any concrete proof of anything, but it certainly does seem to be a rather suspicious connection at the moment.

m.

Gesenai Shirai

"I'm going to do what needs to be done. This has gone on long enough."

From first appearance: "Get ready to acquire footage"

(First mentioned in Talk to Prophet)

Edison

"Did you see my sewing? I do ever so love sewing, but the mean old scientists never let me!"

From Answer Jury's phone

(First appearance: Play with her)

  • It is unclear what Edison actually is. She appears to be a young girl with brown hair wearing a red dress, but she doesn't seem to actually have a physical body. Despite this, she can easily interact with normal people and physical objects.
  • Her abilities are very like those of a ghost, more specifically a poltergeist. She has been shown to be able to overload and manipulate electronics and electricity in general, can move objects (such as doors), and pass through solid objects (albeit with some effort required). She also caused Jane's blood connections to the rest of the party to experience static interference.
  • Her touch causes a person to become paralyzed, and feels similar to being electrocuted. However, this doesn't appear to cause any lasting damage, as she had Jane paralyzed for a length of time and she emerged no worse for wear.
  • Tin foil hats, amusingly enough, seem to negate some, if not all, of her psychic interference.
  • Was given the name Edison by Zone Fifty scientists, who presumably experimented on or with her.
  • Derives a very sick joy from maiming and murdering people. Her preferred weapons are large sewing needles.
  • Is deterred by fire, and seems to "glitch" when exposed to water.
  • The only thing she has been shown to be unable to phase through is her Zone Fifty containment canister. It is unclear why, as inspecting the canister further would mean opening it and releasing her.
  • Her canister was apparently in the possession of Patton Thale, who gave her to Shirai to help in an attempt to get rid of Jane and her group, and possibly also Jury.
  • She is currently trapped in her canister, which is being housed in Bunker D.

DECEASED CHARACTERS

Mr. Vasquez

(...) you approach the car... and see someone else through the windows, smoking a cigarette on the other side.

"Hey, you there!," he shouts. "You know where the break room is? I been lookin' all over this crazy place. My klutz of a friend got 'erself locked in, somehow, an' I can't even find her."

From first appearance: Loot bodies, check car

  • Michelle's former boss, before she quit by turning him into chunks with her very large gun.
  • Was apparently hired by someone and offered "more money than [he'd] ever seen" to fetch Jane out of the hospital in the first chapter, dead or alive.
  • Was much stronger than a man of his size should be, due to having cybernetic implants.
  • Appeared in Chapter 3 as a nightmarish creation referred to as "Spider Vasquez" inside Michelle's mind when we attempted to practice forced syncing with her.
  • For some reason, Jane still carries his police badge with her pretty much everywhere.

RED-EYED PROPHET

"There are two other people in the room with him, neither of whom you recognize. They are staying quiet for the moment."

From first appearance: Make sure your guard is okay

  • A frail, presumably mutated man from the lowest tiers of the city, and a self-proclaimed "prophet" of Enyo.
  • His body was adversely affected by the cleaner air from the higher tiers, necessitating the use of a respirator.
  • Was zealously devoted to Enyo and their cause. Would not be swayed in the slightest when we attempted to make him see that he was just a puppet.
  • Was largely responsible for encouraging Howler Ferrings to orchestrate the Tobu CyberBrains attacks that kicked off the first chapter, as well as recruiting Howler into the Cult of Enyo and seeing he was supplied with the money and computer gear he needed.
  • Had the ability to make people hallucinate their worst fear.
  • Deserved all he got.

NIMROD

"The hulking mutant maintains a vacant expression, staring blankly off into space. His eyes--one in his face, one larger eye in the tumor on his back--wander, gazing off into different directions, but never really focusing on the events of the room for very long. "

From You could hear him wheezing.

(First appearance: Make sure your guard is okay)

  • Big, very big. A mutant from the lowest tiers of the city.
  • Was presumably strong enough to crush a man's skull like a grape.
  • Didn't speak. It's unknown if he couldn't, or just didn't care to.
  • Took orders from Prophet.
  • Was killed in the hospital when Michelle pitted him against Arvin Carpenter's horrible, bio-mechanical flesh beast.

waldo

"The vent appears to be looking out into an office of some kind, where a man in a clown mask is standing guard."

From first appearance: Talk to Prophet

  • A slightly out of shape and sickly-looking man from the lower tiers who was loyal to TH/Enyo.
  • We injected him, however his radioactive blood allowed him to resist our control long enough to make a phone call and set into motion the events of chapter three, trapping us in the warehouse.
  • We found out his name in Start checking the hall.
  • We were using him to scout ahead in the warehouse outside the office we started in, however he was killed when he attempted to open an electrified door.
  • Given what we know, and looking at the reactions of the other Enyo cultists to being potentially controlled by Jane, it is possible that Waldo's death was a suicide.

Cultists

  • Colloquially referred to as "Axeman", "Tiger Woman", and "Helmet (or Heart) Man", they were three Enyo cultists left in the back parts of the warehouse and tasked with hindering and eliminating Jane and Fuse. Their true identities were unknown.
  • Tiger Woman apparently possessed mutant super speed.
  • Axeman either did not feel pain, or was being directly controlled when he confronted Jane and Fuse.
  • Helmet man was presumably very good at holding his breath, as he spent a great deal of time hidden under the remains of the Elegance bartender.
  • All three met untimely ends.
    • Axeman was lit on fire and shot four times.
    • Tiger Woman was injected with Jane's blood and shot herself in the head rather than let herself be controlled by Jane.
    • Helmet Man was shoved into an electrified door after struggling with Fuse.
  • All wore masks, for an as-yet unknown reason.
  • This group also included Waldo.

Lawrence Shaw

You check his pockets. You find a wallet, with no money but an ID. He was Lawrence Shaw.

He was a federal agent.

From Look at the body

(First appearance: Push onward)

  • A federal agent, Shaw was killed when Gesenai Shirai released Edison in the school.
  • Judging by Shirai's comments in Negotiate the terms, it was likely he was under the influence of Save the Queen.
  • Possibly responsible for leading Jury to the school, where she, too, was attacked by Edison.
