The Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day

May, 2022

While both holidays recognize those who have served in the US military, there are several key differences between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It helps to understand how each holiday came to be, when it is honored, how it is commemorated, and, most importantly, who each holiday was created to honor in order to appreciate the distinctions.

Who is it that is being honored?

Memorial Day is a day of remembering for military personnel who have given their lives while serving our nation, particularly those who died in combat or as a consequence of battle wounds.

Veterans Day is a day to recognize and celebrate all members of the United States military who have served in times of peace or conflict.

When Do You Observe Each Holiday?

Memorial Day is held on the final Monday in May each year, while Veterans Day is held on November 11th. When Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, the prior Friday is commonly recognized as a holiday, and when it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is usually observed.

What is the history of Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Although Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971, its roots may be traced all the way back to the Civil War. The day of remembering was founded on May 30, 1868, to memorialize dead soldiers from the Civil War by adorning their graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. When World War I, the holiday was expanded to include dead military men in all conflicts, and the United States began commemorating Memorial Day yearly on the last Monday in May after Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Veterans Day was originally observed on November 11, 1919, one year after World War I came to a close. The celebration, which was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorated the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany to halt all hostilities at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Armistice Day became a legal holiday in 1938, and the November 11 holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 by Congressional law, and it became a day to commemorate anyone who had served in the US military.

What are the ways in which these patriotic holidays are commemorated?

While the three-day holiday weekend at the end of May has become mostly overrun with pool parties and backyard barbecues, Memorial Day remains a solemn opportunity to honor our country's dead troops. In reality, legislation enacted in 2000 urges all Americans to take a moment of silence at 3 p.m. for a National Moment of Remembrance. In addition, monuments and parades are held in many towns and cities around the country, and volunteers continue the early practice of adorning headstones with flags, flowers, and wreaths. All American flags are also expected to be flying at half-staff until 12 p.m. on Memorial Day. Learn more about when to fly the flag at half staff.

Veterans Day, unlike Memorial Day, is not a day of remembrance. It is a day of honor and celebration, as well as an opportunity to recognize those who have served. Many Americans express their gratitude by visiting or helping at local veteran groups or making charitable contributions. Friends and family members of military members who have died frequently leave flags and flowers at their gravesites and express emotional gratitude to those who are still alive, whether in person or via social media.

Pride Flags: Everything you wanted to know about them

June, 2022

Every year, it seems like there are more striped flags than ever before to symbolize each and every Pride group. From large fabric flags that span over many city blocks to small Pride flag emoji symbols on Twitter, it can be difficult to recall which flag represents which subculture, much like the rainbow flags used in the hanky code.

Furthermore, Pride flags are in a perpetual state of change. The classic horizontal rainbow-striped flag has been replaced in recent years by the "Progress Pride Flag," which includes more inclusive colors to recognise groups who have previously been excluded from Pride activities.

So where did all those Pride flags come from, why do we need them, and what do they mean? The answers to the first two questions are simple: They emerged from a need to assert the presence of LGBTQ+ people and their community at a time when they tended to be overlooked by mainstream culture. By displaying a flag, activists of decades past were able to draw attention to their existence, find each other, an push for more inclusion.

But analyzing the meaning of each flag is a bit more complex. Let’s break it all down in this post 👉 https://flagwix.com/collections/hobbies/lifestyle/lgbt/
