BLM is a unique intersection between race and ethnicity for Latinos. BLM is an opportunity for Latinos to support the fast-growing Afro-Latino/Black Hispanic population of the US. Afro-Latino/Black Hispanics may be part of some of our families so this support will directly benefit those we love.
BLM calls for police reform that would decrease the racial profiling that leads to increased numbers of Black Americans in prison. These police reforms would also help the Hispanic Americans that are incarcerated since both Blacks and Hispanics make up a larger part of the US prison population than of the general US population.
Latinos who already support BLM have a responsibility to educate their family and friends who do not support. We need to begin the conversation, since we struggle with it so much now. We need to notice what our family struggles with and then find the educated way to counter them. It will be difficult, but it is the easiest way to start.
Education, conversation, and intersectionality are the foundation for increasing Latino support for BLM. We must also amplify Afro-Latino voices.
Tu Lucha es Mi Lucha. Because saying we aren't racist isn't enough. Because looking out for ourselves isn't enough.
