Respite care also known as Short-Term Accommodation (STA), provides temporary support to people with special needs while offering a temporary break for their primary caregiver or family. It is a crucial support under the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), maintaining the emotional and physical well-being of both the family and participants by preventing burnout and offering an opportunity to explore life outside of a familiar setting.
Under the NDIS, respite care in Adelaide is usually funded for up to 28 days per year. Depending on your needs and NDIS goals, this period of time can be used flexibly or spread across the year as single overnight stays.
You can use it for 2 to 3 days in blocks or a maximum of 14 days at a time. During this period, the participant can engage in various types of group & centre activities and community participation while receiving compassionate care and support from trained support workers in STA facilities.
On the other hand, the caregiver or a family member can pursue their individual pursuits or take a vacation and recharge before resuming their caregiving duty.
The exact number of respite days funded under the NDIS depends on the following factors:
Individual goals and needs as outlined in your plan
Caregiver circumstances like emergencies, health-related issues, or immediate personal pursuits
Budget allocated in your NDIS plan
Availability of NDIS respite providers in Adelaide
Your NDIS planner or support coordinator must ensure that the respite care arrangements align with your interests and funding.
Also, keep in mind that your stay can only be extended under circumstances where the care provider has suddenly fallen ill or if the support has been extended to fuel your long-term goals by the NDIS planner.
