Each year, the 4th grade students at Blake do a journalism unit. The Blake Bear Bugle was formed during this journalism unit, when the current 7th graders were in 4th grade.
This year, the Blake Bear Bugle held a contest to publish the best articles written by 4th graders. These are those articles.

Ice cream is magical, it is stupendous, and when you take that bite…you feel it. Ice cream was made in China during the Tang period in 168-907. Ice cream is a yummy treat for many to enjoy. Ice cream is Also a frozen treat typically made from milk or cream. Ice cream always has a sweetener either sugar or an alternative, and a spice, such as caco or vanilla. The top three ice cream flavors are chocolate, cookies and cream, and vanilla. A funny and cool fact about ice cream is that an average American consumes 23 pounds of ice cream each year. That’s about the size of a medium sized dog. Another cool thing about ice cream is America produces more than 1,000,000,000 gallons of ice cream each year. That’s a lot! if you didn’t know July is national ice cream month so eat as much ice cream as you can in July! Haha. The original vanilla ice cream is served with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and a wafer. A gross fact is the average number of licks to finish a scoop of ice cream is 50. Everyone thinks that the first ice cream flavor was vanilla. Do you think that? Well, if you do it, it’s wrong. Chocolate was the first ice cream flavor made. Some of the strangest flavors of ice cream are avocado, garlic, Stilton, cheese, bacon, booger, pizza, cold sweat, pet bird, tiger tail. Isn’t that gross! The person who ate the most ice cream in one minute on July 16 in 2017, Isaac Harding Davis ate 806 grams of ice cream. Do you think you can beat it! Ice cream is something that you will never forget.

Chess was created 200 BC, but nobody really knows why, where, or who created it. Some people think chess was created by Persians, but others suspect it was created in China. However, many historians agree that chess was originally called Chaturanga, an Indian game more than 2,400 years old. Chaturanga was very similar to chess, except for a few rules; There was no castling (when the king swaps with the rook) or en passanting (when a pawn gets out another pawn, without actually going to the space it is), and pawns couldn’t move two spaces on their first move, among other rules. The name “chess” was created when British merchants misheard the original name, shah, which means king in Persian. Daniel, a Blake eleventh grader who has been playing chess for over 10 years, said his favorite part of chess is the openings. Many people play chess today, and there are chess games happening all over the world.

Love is pulsing through the air, Valentine’s Day is coming up, the most love themed day of the year, chocolates are getting sold out, flowers are being sold out before they can even think about wilting, people are proposing for each other and for asking each other to be theirs and asking them out, but people are getting nervous that they will be rejected most people are hopeful that they won’t get rejected.“Well, it’s a day to celebrate people who mean a lot to you” States Marshall C. In 4 Hales. Chocolate is the symbol of love. Flowers are similar to chocolate this time of year because they both symbolize love and affection. Many people look forward to the day but few don’t look forward to this graceful day. Chocolates, flowers, roses, all of them, symbolize love and affection.

In 2025, the Upper Elementary of the Blaked School cancelled the annual Pinewood Derby. The Pinewood Derby is where students race cars made out of wood which people can decorate. When the car is done, the car would race against other cars. It was a loved tradition at Blake and then it got taken away.
To get more information, Dr. Carrol, the upper school director, agreed to an interview. “One thing I love about the Pinewood Derby is that it’s an opportunity for friends and family. It makes people laugh,” Dr. Carrol said. “The reason it got canceled is because the gym is under construction, the ceiling. So that made us wonder if we should do something else…”
Caroline Schmitt, a previous Derby participant, said that last year was her first year and she is upset that it got canceled.
“I think it’s sad how it got canceled and how people really like it,” said another fan. Derby fans are outraged and sad. It is most likely that the Derby will not ever happen again.

Comics are popular to read at the Blake School. So here are some suggestions from the Blake School. So I interviewed some people, Kaitlyn and Teddy. This is what Kaitlyn answered, a fourth grader in 4 Hales, favorite book is Wings of fire and warrior cats. This is why that’s her favorite book. It has dragons and violence for Wings of fire. What books you might have but if not you want. want. Wings of fire legends darkstalker. Kaitlyn got into Wings of fire when she was eight and a half. Teddy, a fourth grader in 4 Hales, answered that my favorite books are Mike and Kirby comics and war books. Here are just some books people like. Hope you enjoy some of these books.

These are some of the NBA teams fourth graders like. Teddy's favorite basketball team is the Minnesota TimberWolves then the Oklahoma City and New York Knicks. Julian's favorite teams are the TimberWolves, Elite, and the Knicks. These are just some of the Basketball teams people like.
By Theodore Micsky, the original creator of Mike
The Blake School, A school in Hopkins Minnesota is where some great comic characters were formed. At the end of January 2024, A third grader named Nicholas Wen created a comic character called Kirby. Little did he know, he would make much more than one. As soon as Kirby got popular a third grader named Theodore Micsky made a character named Mike. Mike was not as popular as Kirby but he was still a character. About a year later after Kirby and Mikes release a fourth grader named Julian Vessey made a character called Spike while colabing with Teddy and Nicholas in a comic. Till this day that comic which is called Kirby, Mike, and Spike was the first one to get published in early February 2025. So far, the most popular book of the three is Kirby, Mike and Spike. There will be a book about Kirby and a book about Mike soon. Since then two secondary comics came out. Mike's Moments came out followed by Kirby Shorts. Kirby, Mike and Spike might become famous in the future. One thing that all the comics include is a certain theme and each panel does where the last panel left off. That is how these three characters formed.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in another country and go to another school? Well, I can answer you that question. In this article, I will answer the question: what is different in an American school than in a German school? An American school is different from a German school. In America schools are a lot longer than in Germany because schools in Germany are about 4-6 school hours (a school hour is about 45 minutes). American schools are longer. They’re usually about 7-8 hours (American school hours are about 30-45 minutes.)
American schools
In an American school, children go to preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten. Preschoolers are 3 to 4 years old, Pre-Kers are 4 to 5 years old, and Kindergartners are 5 to 6 years old. American schools are separated into three different parts: lower school, middle school, and high school. Lower school is from preschool to 5th grade. Middle school is from 6th grade to 8th grade. And high school is from 9th grade to 12th grade. In America kids eat lunch at school.
We've been asking children, who are new and who have been here already since kindergarten or 1st grade, to tell us a little more about their school. Arlo, a new 4th grade student in Mrs Hales class who also plays the cello, says, “ I like Blake very much. I like the lunches there. I like P. E, art, E and P, and strings. I am happy I moved.” Now Arlo is a very new kid in Blake so it seems like he likes it. Stella , a student also in Mrs Hales class, who has been here since kindergarten, says,’’ I like it in Blake. I stayed here because I liked it. The only thing I don’t like about Blake is recess.”
German schools
In a German lower school, children go to 1st grade , 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and higher (kindergarten isn't a part of school.) As in the first paragraph, you can see that German schools are shorter than American schools, which means that the kids are dismissed between 11:30 a.m and 1:00 p.m. That also means that the children don't eat lunch at school. I also asked children to tell us a little more about German schools. Emilia, an exchange student from Germany got asked, says “ A school in Germany is much different than an American school. German schools are much shorter and you can walk to it.” In Germany a lot of children walk to school because in Germany, there are no school buses or rarely some.
What is the difference
German schools and American schools have very similar things like the subjects in which students learn, but also many differences that both countries have. One difference is that American schools are longer, another one is that
Europeans walk to school.( still doesn't mean that every European walks.) Another three are that Germans don't eat lunch at school, they eat lunch at home or extended day, that Amerncans have lower school, middle school, and high school, and that Germans have no pre-K because there is only a preschool and kindergarten. All the differences that they have can't tell which school is better because they are good in the same way. In my opinion Blake is better.

Video games are super popular but very few think about how they got made and if they did they will probably think that it is the company that published who made it. But they aren't usually the masterminds behind creating the game. Most likely they just modify it and fix bugs, although sometimes they do make them themself. The masterminds behind them are professional coders that work for smaller companies such as Epic or Robtop Games.
It is amazing how they make the games and it takes a lot of time and effort to do. One of the first steps is to get ideas. Nolan Thomas, a 4th grade coder, when asked how he gets ideas said, “I don’t. Reality is making me less creative so I ask my brother.” Although afterwards he stated that he hates his brother’s ideas and doesn't know why he still uses them.
The next step is coding the game. This is arguably the hardest part because the game designer has to code it then debug it 2-3 times for each small detail. But once the game designer finishes it all, the game designer needs is a play tester. The job of a play tester is to play the game and look for bugs.
After that they send it back to the game designer with the bugs so the game designer can fix them. Usually this takes anywhere from 2-90 times depending on the complexity of the game and how important the game will be in the gaming community.
Finally, the game designer needs an editor who will publish the game and introduce it into the world of gaming. Then the game designer will repeat this project in smaller intervals called updates.
If you want to code games a good way to do it is Scratch which is easyer or Python Which is harder but you can post games on both for free.

There are many different types of arts at Blake but one of the most important ones is theater. Theater at Blake is way different than most public’s schools because most programs don’t start until middle school but Blake’s starts in kindergarten goes through high school. Every year Blake does a middle school and high school play and musical. This year the musicals are Matilda, for middle school. And The Lightning thief, the Percy Jackson musical for the high school. “ My favorite part of theater at Blake is watching the students shine up on the stage! I always get so proud. When I was a student, I was way too scared to be on stage! Kids at Blake are super brave and talented.” Said Ms.Hales, a 4th grade teacher. Bennett, a 4th grader said his favorite part is “ how theatrical it is and how when we do plays everybody gets a role” Another 4th grader, Charlotte f. said she likes it “ For many reasons but one of the reasons is because your not pressured to be perfect and it's just fun and there not really such a thing as too much acting and everybody really supportive and it's just fun.” “ I like how we do plays and we don’t just goof around,” said Stella, a 4th grader. From classes to clubs to shows Blake has many choices for theater.

I recommend the Land Of Stories. It is an adventure about a girl named Alex Bailey, and a boy named Connor Bailey. They travel to the fairytale world where they discover all of their childhood stories in real life. A Tale Of Magic, a novel written by Chris Colfer, is a before story of the land of stories. It’s about the fairy godmother and the fairy council when they are teenagers, they face life threatening challenges. Another good book for people who don’t like chapter books is Sweet Valley Twins. It is a series of books about twins who are absolutely different but one twin thinks the other twin is mean. Our last recommendation is Out Of My Mind. Out Of My Mind is a book about a girl with cerebral palsy. She is a kind, funny, good humored girl. Her name is Melody. This book it’s very emotional so I do not recommend reading it if you do not like emotions.

Sports If you are having a hard time trying to find an after school activity try one of these. Looking for a more active sport? Try Soccer! Soccer is really good if you love to run. Soccer is about running and you can do different positions like goalie, defense, offense and /midfield. If you love math, try joining a math club. It's a great way to make more friends. Well, enjoy one of your passions. Another option is dance. Here is a little bit about it. Dance is about being yourself and showing yourself through the dance floor. There are many different types of dance, lyrical, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and many more.If you want to know some information about gymnastics, here is some. Gymnastics is about being flexible and doing lots of tumbling. Gymnastics is also about having fun. Another activity is golf. A lot of people don’t like golf. But it is great if you practice and focus. Those are many activities, if you don’t try them you will never know!

The Teachers Lounge is where teachers go to print things, get their Horrible coffee, gather supplies, and plot their EVIL plans against their kids like math and science. Teachers also have meetings in that room, but the worst part about it is they plot revenge back to their kids. It is absolutely horrible! Another thing about the teacher lounge is that the teachers have a fridge and microwave so they can eat whatever food they want like pizza and pasta everyday.

The animal humane society saves several animals from a cruelty case in Beltrami county. On Friday December sixth 2024, Animal humane society workers rushed to help several dogs and cats. They found 29 cats and 35 dogs but they believe there are still 170 pets unaccounted for. Before that day they heard of the terrible events happening at a rural property in Beltrami county and they started to prepare for as many 300 animals by ajusting there normal intake, creating temporary housing and borrowing crates and kennels from other rescues. When they inspected the animals they discovered many of them had injuries and illnesses. Several of the dogs had physical injuries due to fighting over feces, there only source of food. The cats lived in crapped, filthy cages while the dogs roamed the property even in the cold. The dogs slept in small sheds crowded with trash in dirty dog beds. The animal humane society gave all the pets Medicine and lots of love. They hope the pets will be ready for adoption in three to four weeks. The former owners have been arrested by the Beltrami county sheriffs office.

You don’t have to adopt a pet to have one and support a rescue. People everywhere chose foster for rescues. Not all shelter need or except foster families but most of them do. Fostering pets helps the animals get more care and love than if they are at a shelter. It also helps them got more socialized. The benefits don’t stop there, if they are at a house they foster family will get to know them better and can give more information to there forever family
Gigi Chakhvashvili, a fourth grader and foster owner says, “ The animals don’t have a home and I’m giving them a temporary home.”
Gigi and her family have been fostering for the Bond Between for two years and have fostered three dogs and fourteen cats. She is currently fostering a male dog named Ranger.
Another foster family is Ms. Molly Hales, a fourth grade teacher.
She said “ I think I am helping the family find the perfect pet.”
Ms. Hales has been fostering for five years and has fostered twenty dogs. Like Gigi, she also fosters for the Bond Between. She is currently fostering a fourteen year old male yorkie named Jojo. She has also adopted a dog from the animal humane society named Leo who gets along very well with Jojo. They like to snuggle under a blanket together. Just the magic of fostering at work.

Many fourth graders have the same favorite books: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate and Spy School.
Aaron Paye a fourth grader in Mr. Seme’s class says “I like Big Nate because he is funny and hilarious,”
Ms. Guider thinks that Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate and Spy school are so popular because they hold your attention and don’t get boring. They are also easy and they flow.
She says “ All my children have read them, they are like desert books.”
”They aren’t similar, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate are comedy friendship and Spy School is adventure mystery,”
Some other fourth grade favorites include The One Only series, Harry Potter and I Survived.
Trixie Bershow says “ I love Harry Potter because it is exiting and cadventurous, I love all the spells,”
Another fourth grader Enzo Rodel said “ I like I survived because I like the storys, My favorite book is D-Day.”
Evan Lopez, a fourth grader in Mr. Seme’s class says “I like the one and only Ivan Because there is a gorilla trapped in a circus and he gets moved to a nature park.”
Charlotte Hutchinson, A fourth grader in Ms. Rainey’s class states “My Favorite Book is Green glass house, I just say my favorite book is the one I am reading right now, My least favorite book is Jojo Macoons because she is full of herself and is spoiled.”
Ms. Guider and Ms. Hove have also noticed that fourth graders tend to prefer graphic novels and fifth graders tend to prefer novel.
“I prefer novels,” Says fourth grader Pepin Gihring “I think graphic novels are desert books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Spy School and Big Nate, I think that is why graphic novels are more popular,”

The fourth grade visited Hoċokata Ti in Shakopee on Wednesday, January 29th, at 8:45 a.m. They learned about Dakota people and history about them. The fourth graders each went through Hoċokata Ti’s public exhibit, Mdewankanton: Dwellers of Spirit Lake, separated by class. They traveled through era’s, learning about winter camps, summer camps, the Dakota war, ect. One fourth grader who went said “It was really interesting. My favorite part was definitely the winter camp part of the exhibit because I got to go inside the tipi.” Another fourth grader stated, “ I really liked the field trip, but I wish we could have gotten more time to look at the exhibit’s, because I didn’t get to look at everything I wanted too, but it was really cool.”

Pets are a popular thing for people around the world to have, and Mr. Seme’s class is no exception! With 20 students and 1 teacher, 3 student’s and the teacher have one pet, 11 students have more pets than one, and six students don’t have a pet. Gigi Chakhvashvili, fourth grader in Mr. Seme’s class, who fosters animals, say’s “ I’ve fostered 3 dogs and 14 cats. I love fostering animals, except they poop on my floor. I love fostering because the animal can love you, and you can love it.” Another fourth grader, Pepin Ghiring, who has 3 pets, 2 recently adopted guinea pigs named Mya and Nova, and 1 mini black labradoodle named Luna. She says, “ I love having pets! The best part about having two pets of my own is that I can be independent. And I love having Luna because I love dogs. One thing I wish was different about my guinea pig’s though is that I wish they would warm up to me faster and let me hold them.” These are just two very experienced pet owners in Mr. Seme’s fourth grade class. There are many other experienced pet owners in this class, but these are just two very experienced pet owners.

Ducks should be pets. They are not the “basic” pets that’s for sure, but they are still as lovable as all of the other pets. You know how dogs jump up to greet you, and cats purr when they're happy? Ducks can do that too, they just quack instead of barking and purring. They’re just like “normal” pets. Now, when I tell people about this, they always end up asking, “What do you do with ducks? What should you feed them?” So, to answer the feeding questions, the number one duck food is Stella & Chewy’s Freeze Dried Duck Duck Goose Meal Mixer. And what you should do with ducks is a more complicated answer. You can’t really play fetch or really snuggle with a duck (even though you kind of can), but you can feed it, teach it tricks, and watch it play in the water if it’s a water duck. Since ducks are supposed to live in water and land, it may be a complication to have ducks as a pet. But to meet that need, you can just make a small pond in your yard, or if you have a pond nearby, you can go there to let your duck be in water for a while, as long as you can call them back. Ducks are a lot like “normal pets” actually. You can train them and play with them just like dogs or cats. Gigi Chakhvashvili, a fourth grader in Mr. Seme’s class says, “It depends on if you're a good owner or not. If you're a bad owner, don’t get a duck. If you're a good owner, then you can get a duck.” Ezra Faleel, another fourth grader in 4S says, “I don’t think ducks should be pets.” Different opinions come about ducks, but I think they should be pets. Other people don’t though.

Ai has been around for a long time and all of us share the same question, is Ai going to take over? And if it did, would it really be bad? Well, we can’t exactly know, but some Ai’s can be worse than others, and some people might actually want Ai to take over. On the internet people keep advancing Ai’s, for example, Chat GPT, or another popular one is Alexa or Siri.
An Ai takeover would probably happen sometime in the future, (I’m thinking 2500-3000) Ai would try to take over because that is when Ai would get really advanced but this is mostly up to us humans.
Ai (Artificial Intelligence) could be anything it wants to be which is why it could very easily take over, and with more and more Ai’s coming around and being created, think of how much easier/harder it would be to live a life with Ai being your nextdoor neighbor, It’s probably not the worst thing ever… and Ai is pretty bad right now but just think, Ai could much much worse.
An Ai take over isn’t the worst thing ever is one of Brooke Guerra’s opinions as she states: “They can make our jobs easier, if robots took over we could do stuff a lot faster than usual..! Ai is super useful to the world.” But Chloe Moore argues: “I think they would make us their slaves and replace a lot of jobs if they took over, and then people would lose more money.”
Mostly, people, I don’t think, want Ai to take over the world, and since it's up to us, I don’t think Ai will. (Or could.)

On January 7th, 2025, the giant California fire started.
California’s giant wildfire season is during dry/high temperatures, but this time, this wildfire is one of the worst ones some people have seen, and, this one is not in summer/fall, this is during the winter.
because of the high winds and crispy dry land in California, fires can easily spread, and even though a lot of people have heard or experienced a wildfire before this one, maybe if you have been in America for the last three years or longer, you have heard and seen affects of Canada wildfires, but this time it’s direct, and this California wildfire is practically as bad as Canadas.
Thousands and thousands of other structures were either burned, demolished by wind, or abandoned in the fire. Even though it's still partially going, its contained so technically it's kind of safe now, but it was definitely wasn’t just a few weeks ago, because they had reported 13-24 people found dead because of the giant fire. About 180,000 people were told to leave their homes in California in areas that had more fire mostly than others. The California fire department has been working nonstop to stop the fire, and even other big fire departments have even chipped in their part but not even everyone all of them together could have stopped the fire immediately at first glance, but they were actually killing the fire very quickly for the giant size of California.
The places that had the greatest fires were: Santa Monica and Malibu.
The california fire will probably not start back up and instead keep shrinking down until its the size of a flame on a matcher, which is probably soon.

Music, we all love it! On January 29,2025, the fourth grade strings group performed two songs in the one and only Blake School MPAC. They played two songs: Ode to Joy and Boil Them Cabbage Down. They played to have some fun for them, the kids, and grownups. They did this by mixing together instruments like viola, violin and cello. Fourth grader Elin Lall says, ‘‘I liked it when they played many different parts.” Brooke Gurerra says, ‘‘I noticed that there was a special part at the end, the stomp HEY! Part.” This part of the performance happened at the end, when the orchestra stood up and stomped their feet and shouted “Hey!” Another fourth grader, Pepin Gihring said, ‘‘I thought that it was funny when they played London Bridge with a few extra bits here and there.’’ They are very excited to play at another prefomence soon.
Everybody probably knows that music has been with us since a long long long long long long time. It goes back many decades. Did you know the first instrument was a hollowed out stick which was supposed to be a flute? Another fact is that there are about 300 different stringed instruments.

In 2024, two fourth graders, Trixie Bershow and Pepin Gihring, started an animal support business to improve animals’ lives in Minneapolis, MN. The fourth graders like to meet up at school and make plans. They research what animals need,to make the animals happy they collect and make toys. The way they get the money is from doing chores around the house and then donating it to shelters. The fourth graders hope for their business to grow and perhaps even have a real shop someday!
Right now Pepin and Trixie are thinking of helping dogs and then thinking of helping cats next

You probably know about sanctuaries for dogs, cats, fish and hamsters (etc). But did you know there are sanctuaries for horses? Healing hearts is one of those. They usually get horses from *killing pens and people who can’t take care of them. It takes $250 to feed a horse for a month. The horses there get a minimum of one vet visit per year, but some horses that need extra help will get a few more. Most of the horses there get adopted but some die before. Healing Hearts keeps a binder of the horses that get adopted and the ones who die. They even have a folder where they keep track of who was sick. A story of how they got six of their horses they have right now is… a trainer had a lot of horses and taught on them and trained with them but one day they found out that she had a disease where she would forget to do stuff, like, she would forget to feed the horses and leave them in *cross ties, stuff like that, so Healing hearts, they went and asked to take the horses and find a better home for them, and of course she didn’t like the idea but in the end she gave them six of the horses, three of them died because they couldn’t take it anymore but they still have three. Right now they have sixteen horses including the three I was just talking about and… five of them found homes!! Healing hearts has been at three different locations but they moved to Arizona to get more volunteers. Most of their horses are on the older side but they have a few young ones, the oldest is thirty two and the youngest is one. The average age of a horse is twenty five. There is one horse there that can’t chew hay because it has bad teeth, another got his *cannon bone twisted, they take in so many injured and horses who don’t get treated nicely. A few of the horses are on Equisul which is like Tylenol for horses. It is important to have these sanctuaries because a lot of horses are going to be saved. Maybe we should have one in Minneapolis? A national park? You decide.
*Cross ties: Where you put a horse to put saddles and bridles on them. (Bridles and saddles are what you use to ride a horse)
*Cannon bone: like a horse's shin.
*Killing pens: where horses go if they are old, injured, unwanted, or can’t be ridden, so they kill them.

On January 30, 2025, an airplane with 67 passengers was landing at the Washington Reagan National Airport in Washington DC. A pilot in training was flying a US military helicopter at the same time. The helicopter was flying over the airport to practice navigating around plane traffic. Next, the helicopter accidentally flew in the way of the airplane, causing it to crash. The plane crashed in the river. The helicopter hit the right engine, and unfortunately all 67 passengers and the pilots died. The search started immediately, but the search party didn’t find everybody. Their still searching and finding parts of the plane.

Kamie Page 5th grade teacher and author. Have you ever wondered about Kamie Page? Read this article to find out all about her.
Kamie Page has written 5 books! Her favorite illustrations are in Bee Love and Grandpa Alan’s Sugar Shack. She said that “picking a favorite book is like asking your parents which kid is their favorite.” The first book Kamie Page wrote is Alan And His Perfectly Pointy Impossibly Perpendicular Pinky. She says something hard about writing books is coming up with ideas and compromising with her dad what they should write about. Kamie Page started writing books in 2012 and the book was published in 2013.
Kamie Page says that her favorite place to write books is “somewhere cozy.” Something cool about Kamie Page and her dad is that they publish their own books. Kamie's most recent book is Baking Up Love.
These books are amazing! My favorite book is Grandpa Alan’s Sugar Shack because the illustrations are amazing.
