The Rememberer tells the true story of Joyce Cheeka, a young Squaxin Indian girl, who is forcibly taken from her home and placed in a government-run school in 1911. As the chosen "rememberer" for her tribe an honor passed down to her from her grandfather, Mud Bay Sam it is Joyce's duty to pass on the stories, history and wisdom of her people. However, the aims of the white boarding school are quite the opposite. Their job is to eliminate any trace of Joyce's heritage. Through her friendship with the headmaster at the school, and with the help of her "spirit guide," Joyce succeeds in forming a bridge between this new world and the world of her ancestors. Through her patience, grit, humor, curiosity and inclusiveness of spirit, she does honor to the words of her elders: "Each day is a gift. And to waste that day is inexcusable. Account for yourself. Be useful." Joyce Simmons Cheeka lived a remarkable, heroic and, indeed, useful life.

It sure is hard to be humble when you're a swashbuckling, egocentric super-hero. But our gallant guy-in-green tries his best as he swaggers through The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, a frantically funny, Monty Python-esque retelling of the classic. This time around, the legendary legend, in his never-ending quest to aid the needy, encounters a lovely damsel-in-distress (oddly obsessed with skin conditions); an ever-scheming sheriff who would rather bowl a strike than hit a bull's-eye; a gold-hoarding, bad-guy monarch wannabe; and a good-natured "Town's Guy" who manages to make his way into every scene, whether he belongs there or not. Combine them with an expandable band of spoon-wielding Merry Men whose collective IQs equal six, and you've got an irreverent jaunt through Sherwood Forest you won't soon forget!

Justyce Von Ins-Kole
Responsible for running the theatre company, working closely with each member of the board to make sure every event runs smoothly. The Board President manages each board member to make sure they have what they need and know what to do, and often takes charge in planning things from crew days to fundraisers to our social media campaign.
Lillian Johnson
Responsible for keeping the life and spirit of our shows alive for as long as BRTC exists. The Head of Archives and their team takes headshots of the cast, pictures and video of shows, and manages the website.
I débuted as Lovely Lady #2 in BRTC's production of Les Misérables, and have been in love with the theatre ever since. Along with being a theatre kid, I am an aspiring author, writing anything from short stories to stand-alone novels to trilogies, and I hope to begin publishing soon! I love my family, my cat, and my wonderful theatre people. BRTC is like my second family, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Lucy Carpenter
Responsible for breathing color and life into our shows, letting both the audience and the actors become immersed in the world on the stage. The Head of Art and their team carefully paints almost everything you see on stage.
Lucy has been seen on the BR stage for the last four years. Favorites include Les Miserables, Puffs, and Mission Space: Out of Control. She was also Hermia in Holland Community Theater's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Lucy spends her limited spare time reading, drawing, making pretzels, and binge-watching her favorite TV shows.
Alma VanderKolk
Responsible for immersing both audience and actors in the world on stage through clothes! The Head of Costumes and their team hunts for every piece you see actors wearing, making what they can't find, from hats, to shirts, to wedding dresses, to mermaid tails.
I love sewing, drawing and all things theatre! I have been in the theatre company since 2022 and I have been head of costumes since the beginning of this year. While I am on stage for most shows I am also the honorable mention in making sure everyone has pants!
Mia Salinas
Responsible for making sure every audience member can see every detail of an actor's expression, bringing them life. The Head of Hair and Makeup and their team makes sure every cast member has makeup, knows how to use it, and styles their hair appropriately for each show.
Mia Salinas moved to Michigan and joined BR in 8th Grade and jumped straight into everything about the theater company. She did all 3 shows in the 2023-24 season (Hannah in Puffs, Legles in Les Mis, and Prentiss in PATSC) and found an amazing community of people. She loves performing, working on projects, being active, movies, and spending time with her friends. As a board member she hopes she can give every cast a say in how they look in shows, encourage collaboration, and make sure that others feel as welcomed in the theater company as she has felt.
Olive Frey
Responsible for making sure every little detail on stage is perfect, from books to flowers to weapons to cash! The Head of Props and their team makes sure every piece of the theatre puzzle is on stage and readily available, hunting thrift shops for some and building others themselves.
Hi! I like making things (anything) and being silly! I also especially enjoy music, video games, coffee, crocheting, dum dum wrappers, paper cranes, weird earrings, cats, fuzzy socks, an organized gmail inbox, piano, and procrastination! Join props!!
Nemo Salazar
Responsible for sharing the wonders of the Black River Theatre Company with the world. The Head of Public Relations and their team manages the BRTC social media accounts and advertises for every show.
Nemo has been doing theatre for 5 years, with both the BRTC and Holland Community Theatre, and has loved every show he has been in. Some of his favorite roles he's played have been Oliver Rivers (Puffs), Rapunzel's Prince (Into the Woods), and Josh (Mission Out Of Control). Aside from doing theatre, Nemo also plays basketball, is on student council, and is the Head of PR on the BRTC board. As you can see he is very lazy.
Dax Dirkse
Responsible for building up the world of every show nearly from scratch, and keeping it safe for everyone involved. The Head of Set and their team builds everything you see on stage.
I love to do theater, but what I love the most about it is the people. They're simply the nicest, funniest, and just the best people to be around.
Christina Tronrud
Responsible for bringing each new generation of theatre kids, keeping BRTC alive. The Middle School Representative visits middle school classes often to encourage them to join theatre.
I love hanging out with all these weird lovable nerds, and I'm super glad I found my people.
