WASP - Blackie calls a band meeting about me
Taken from a Facebook post
-
In 1986, WASP was middling for Sabbath with Anthrax as the opener.
They were playing a Monday at the Meadowlands arena (whatever it was called then).
The day before I get a call from Randy Piper from WASP on a payphone at a rest area.
He said he had to talk quickly, but Blackie called a band meeting about me and how nobody was allowed to "party" with me later that night when they got to their Columbus Circle hotel.
See the next day, they were playing the NYC market and major press, and record executives were going to be there and he insisted they be their best
Randy explained that I was still comped and was on the list for the show and after party, but ...
I was bummed but thought it was awesome that arena level bands were having meetings about me lol.
I said it sucked that I won't see him later and he said ... F*CK THAT ... see you later.
He told me Blackie was doing KRock that night from 11-1am but was leaving about 8pm to do something else with Chris Holmes and to come about 8:30 and bring "SKITTLES".
Randy was THE F*CKING MAN.
I get some SKITTLES and forget who I went with that night, but I get to his suite and Randy is with the bands tour bus driver and the 4 of us start partying and we had a fn blast ... literally.
About 4 in the morning, Randy goes "I need my 8 hours guys, this is a big gig" ... total pro.
I get it and l go to elevator and door opens and ...
YOU GUESSED IT ... it was Blackie and Chris ... both wasted ... I mean severely.
Blackie realized I had to be there for Randy and even though he was fd up, he was mad.
Next day Randy calls me and said Blacke argued with him, but Randy was ready for bed and Blackie was in FAR worse shape.
He told me they had it out and hoped my name would still be on the list ...
Now I am possibly the 'Yoko Ono of WASP' ... what a weird life I lead.
I get to the Meadowlands and have tix but no passes ... I guess that was a compromise.
WASP played and Randy killed it. Best I ever heard him, Blackie was not having a good night at all.
I go to the after-party and it's only about 12 people and Blackie weren't there, I don't think any band members were, if they were they left fast.
I wind up sitting next to Rod Smallwood (manager) and he ask, "how bad was it?", I said not horrendous, but Blackie sounded shot, but at least Randy killed it.
He said ... "Randy wasn't up all night!"
I go home and the next day get a call from Randy telling me to come by the hotel ... huh?
He explained Blackie is out of commission and they canceled Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday shows and now we had 3 days to party and go nuts ...
Funny how that worked out, huh?
Next three days was an AH YES INDEED blur.
Randy was stupidly thrown out of WASP after that tour and the next time I saw WASP was when they had Slayer open at the Capital Theater in NJ.
I was laminated through Slayer so I got to go to the side room that overlooked the stage to watch Slayer DESTROY .
Blackie and Chris come out in full stage gear to take a look and Blackie sees Slayer KILLING it.
He sees me and says "Why does Rod (manager) always put us on with these fucking bands?
Last three tours were with Metallica, Anthrax and now Slayer.
Chris sees me and says "I miss Randy, he kept Blackie in check"
WASP came on to a half-filled arena that wasn't interested in their "circus" themed show which was a more poser vibe than Randy era WASP.
Randy was the balls in the band ...
