The horror industry has always been a genre where black people were neglected, rarely seeing themselves on screen unless in the shadows of white main characters. The research that I have done has shown me exactly why this is. It is deeply rooted in history that black men will be the aggressor that white people should fear or that they are substandard in comparison to white people. This ideology was then pushed into the film industry. Once black people did get their opportunities in horror films, they did so in a way where their heritage and societal hardships were displayed too, which gave a needed depth and realism to each film. These films did more than just give the occasional fright, they also gave insight to what African American men have dealt with and continue to deal with, proving that reality is the true menace to black men.
