Rationale
Extreme phenomena in the universe are often triggered by the strong gravitational pull of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Ultra-high spatial resolution observations with VLBI provide unique clues to understanding what happens around the SMBHs.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for researchers with diverse perspectives on SMBH research to come together to thoroughly review and discuss the latest developments in SMBH observations and related theory, utilizing not only VLBI but also a variety of other instruments across multi-wavelengths. The goal of the workshop is to inspire fresh research ideas of each participant.
In this workshop, we will overview not only recent exciting topics of VLBI observations of SMBH-powered sources but also some progress of gravitational-wave background observations by pulsar timing arrays (PTA), which could be related to SMBH binaries (SMBHBs).
We have also added a new session on a space VLBI mission in the submillimeter-wave band called Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) (Mission Concept Paper: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/ 2022SPIE12180E..0MK/abstract). We look forward to your participation.
