Black Academic Experiences For You

Welcome to the BlacademicUS website! The purpose of this community organization is to serve as a reference guide for 1) Black individuals who seek resources that help navigate through higher education (with ease) and 2) institutions to make academia more inclusive for Black and Indigenous people of color (BIPOC). Here, we create discourse around mental wellness, discuss varying issues in and out of the Black community, share scholarship opportunities, promote scholars making a difference in their community, etc.

Meet the Team

Joelle Jenkins (she/her) | Founder & Chief Operations Director

Joelle Jenkins is a recent graduate from the University of Northern Colorado obtaining a B.A. in Environmental & Sustainability Studies with minors in Biology and Africana Studies. This coming fall, she will be attending The Ohio State University to begin her Master's in Environment & Natural Resources. Her previous involvement on campus includes (but is not limited to) being the President of the Student Leadership for Environmental Action Fund, a student researcher in the McNair Scholars Program, and the Illustrator/Digital Media Assistant in the Benedict Ornithology Lab. Off-campus, Joelle has been involved with co-organizing different events such as Black Birder's Week and Black Mammalogist's Week where she was fortunate to work with other Black professionals and was featured on National Geographic Society and Amy Poehler's Smart Girls.

Veronica Mixon (she/her) | Co-Founder & Director of Wellness

Veronica is a recent graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received a dual degree student in African American Studies (B.A) and Psychology (B.S). Additionally, she has received a certificate in Clinical Mental Health. During her time at UAB, she has been the President of the African American Studies Organization, a board member for the Suicide Prevention Task Force, a student researcher for C.L.A.Y.S lab, an intern at UAB’s Student Counseling Services Office, and a member of the McNair Scholars Program. In the Fall of 2021, she will be continuing her education at Florida A & M University to pursue an M.S. in Community Psychology. Later, she plans to obtain a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Her research interests include racial identity, social connectedness, and mental health disparities among black populations.

Deja Newton (she/her) | STEM & Outreach Director

Deja is a senior studying Environment Science (B.S.) at the University of San Francisco. As the President of the USF's Strategy for Ecology, Education, Diversity, and Sustainability (SEEDS) chapter under ESA, her love for ecology has shown in her activist work on and off-campus. Deja is also involved in the student section of Society of Wetland Scientists. Currently, she is doing GIS work for Xalgorithims. Upon graduation, Deja will be taking on the role of an Environmental Planner.

Keyauna Caro (she/her) | Creative Writing Director & Event Planner

Keyauna Caro is a recent graduate from the University of Northern Colorado double majoring in Journalism News and Multimedia (B.A.) and English Literature (B.A.) with a minor in Business. She loves reading, editing and writing, and served as the Co-Editor-In-Chief and Reporter at the UNC Mirror and a Reporter for Bear News. She too served as an active member of African Student Union. Keyauna is currently looking for employment in the journalism field, but her end goal is the position of Editor-in-Chief at Vogue or Essence Magazine.

Keyanna Stokes (she/her) | Outreach Coordinator & Public Relations Chair

Keyanna Stokes is a junior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Public Health with a concentration in Global Health Studies while minoring in Japanese and International Studies. She is the Communications Chair for the Japanese Culture Club, Outreach Coordinator for Active Minds UAB, and Shadowing Coordinator for UAB Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students. Outside of school, she volunteers with the American Red Cross and Affinity Hospice. She loves to be active in her school and community. She has a passion for the Japanese culture and language, ESPECIALLY anime- which is why she is studying Japanese. Keyanna is currently working on her virtual internship with USAC and her application to study abroad in the UK for the Spring of 2022.
