Paul Smith is the Head Coach at BKA and the driving force behind the club's inclusive and welcoming ethos. With over 30 years of martial arts experience, Paul holds a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Kickboxing and has represented the WAKO British Kickboxing Team on four separate occasions, competing an elite international level.
Paul's martial arts journey has been diverse, in addition to his extensive background in kickboxing he has also competed in MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai and No Gi Grappling. His broad experience across different disciplines has given him a well rounded skill set, which he brings to every class he teaches. Paul's training has taken him to several clubs throughout his career, but he credits two coaches in particular as his biggest influences. Lee Mayo who's technical expertise and guidance shaped much of Paul's style and the late Kru Joe Emmons, whos mentorship and philosophy left a lasting impact on Paul both as a fighter and a coach.
Driven by his own feelings of feeling unwelcome as a young martial artist, Paul founded Basildon Kickboxing Academy to create a different kind of club. One where everyone feels accepted, supported and encouraged to reach their potential.
As a coach Paul is known for technical precision and clear structured teaching. He has a sharp eye for detail and focuses on helping students develop strong fundamentals that they can build on as they progress. His sessions balance training with practical application to ensure competitors of all levels understand the "why" behind each technique.
Paul's extensive competition background allows him to prepare fighters for high pressure environments, he is a highly experienced corner man often found ringside providing calm, focused support.
Whether coaching for fitness, self defence or competition success. Paul's goal is to always pass on his knowledge in a way that's accessible, effective and tailored to each individual.
Natasha is a Junior Coach at BKA and actively competes in K1 across the country. Holding a Purple Belt (2nd Kyu) she has been training for 3 years and quickly made a mark on the competition circuit.
A two time ISKA British Championships Silver Medalist, Natasha brings her competition experience and passion for the sport into every class she teaches. Her fun, energetic approach makes her a favourite among the junior members, creating an environment where kids are excited to train, learn and stay active.
Natasha began coaching after being encouraged by the members and coaches at the club, who recognised her natural ability to connect with people and inspire others. She is particularly excellent with new members who feel anxious or have additional needs ensuring they feel welcomed, comfortable and supported from their very first session.
Her focus is making fitness enjoyable while helping young students build confidence, develop their skills and reach their physical goals. Whether they are beginners or working towards competitions, Natasha makes sure every child feels part of the team.
Darren Adams is a Junior Coach at BKA holding a Purple Belt (2nd Kyu) in kickboxing with over 3 years of training and also with a background in Aikido, Darren brings a broad martial arts perspective to his coaching.
After being given the opportunity to start coaching by BKA Head Coach Paul Smith, Darren has thrived - quickly becoming a valued member of the club's coaching team. His calm, supportive approach and dedication to passing on his knowledge make him a fantastic mentor for the junior members. Darren focuses on helping students develop their skills while making sure they enjoy every lesson and feel part of the club community.
Darren is also an active competitor, having earned 2 bronze medals at the ISKA British Championships. Outside of coaching and competing, his an experienced corner man and is often seen working alongside Coach Paul in the fighters corner, providing solid support and guidance during their bouts.
Wayne Pearson is a Junior Coach at BKA holding a Blue Belt (3rd Kyu) in kickboxing. With 2 years of dedication to training in kickboxing and previous experience in other martial arts from a young age, Wayne brings a solid foundation and passion to his coaching role.
Wayne started coaching because he loves seeing students progress and grow, both in their skillset and confidence. He strongly believes that martial arts is just as important for mental wellbeing as it is for physical fitness. His teaching style focuses on breaking down techniques into clear, simple steps, ensuring that every students understands the fundamentals and build solid skills from the ground up.
An active competitor, Wayne has earned a Silver Medal at the ISKA British Championships, bringing his experience from the ring into his coaching. Whether assisting beginners or helping more advanced students refine their technique, Wayne is dedicated to making sure everyone feels supported and motivated to achieve their best.
