August 2022:

Here we go again! Another school year with all the excitement that comes with it.  New possibilities, new opportunitis.  A fresh start .

Who am I? I came to Jefferson County School District in 2019 as a district wide substitute.  This is a second, at least, career for me after my 2017 retirement as Chief of Police and Assistant City Manager in Astoria OR.  I loved my career in policing until I no longer did.  When it was time to leave that behind I didn't know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to still be of service to my community.  After all, that is what most of my adult life was, a life of service with 3 years in the US Army and 25 years in law enforcement.

I have always been interested in helping others find their truth and new information.  I have been instructing and teaching since my first supervisory job in the US Army and have never stopped.  I taught a number of topics for my own department, for the public in informational and educational settings, I was a DARE instructor and taught courses to supervisors and middle managers at the Oregon Police Academy.  I also taught professional writing at the community college level.  I am also a pretty prolific writer writing for Law Abiding Biker , and on my own blogs at Chief Johnston.

I attended Concordia University Portland obtaining my BA in Management, Communications, and Leadership and Portland State University obtaining a Master in Public Administration.  I completed my Master of Teaching degree at George Fox University in spring 2022.  My family believes in education, my wife also has an MPA from PSU and an MaT, my adult sons have four associate degrees, a BA in Criminal Justice A BA in Philosophy and an MA in Public Policy.  My father has a BA in Education, a MA in Divinity, and a PhD in Divinity.

I love motorcycles, my family, and the Packers.  My cover photo is from a motorcycle trip to Sturgis and Mount Rushmore.  I am the proud father of two amazing boys who are a police officer and a paramedic and the proud stepfather of three great kids in this district that I cannot wait to help achieve their potential.

Availability

I am available by email at bjohnston@509j.net.  This email is much more efficient at reaching me that using the white buffalo one or sending comments on assignments through the classroom.

My teaching hours are 08:00 - 4:00 Monday -Friday.   Most of those hours are instructional time so I am not easy to reach..  You can reach me by phone at 541.475.7265 x 2351.  I am flexible on time to talk to parents and students if we can make time in advance that works for all of us.

Google Classrooms

We will use Google Classrooms to track work, post assignments and resources.  There are pages here for each of the subjects I am teaching and on that content page is a link to all individual classes I am teaching.  These pages are relatively static, I may post files here so that people outside the classroom have access to them but mostly the website is static and the classroom is the active source for information.
