This is a gallery of the various custom #snowflakes I've created each winter since 2017. Each year I choose an overall theme, but often throw in one-off designs as well depending on what I'm excited to make. My designs are all hand-drawn, but since 2022 I've been using a Cricut to complete the cutting rather than folding and cutting with an Xacto knife.
Want to make your own snowflakes?
As of December 2024, I'm working on getting .bmp files linked to every image so you can try cutting these on your own Cricut if you like. If you do make one of your own, I'd love to see a picture - you can reach me at bjbalas [at] gmail [dot] com.
If you download some templates and enjoy them, or if you'd just like to send a small donation my way ($1-$5) to support #snowflake art you can visit my Ko-fi page here: https://ko-fi.com/bjbalas or use the button below - Never expected, but always appreciated!
Spongebob Squarepants (2024 series)
For my 2024 series, I decided to go with Spongebob Squarepants even though I've only ever seen the show while sleep-deprived and stressed in the cafeteria at Children's Hospital Boston. I didn't realize how much my co-workers would get into these designs, but that meant I quickly learned about all the random characters and quotable moments from the show. This ended up being my biggest series to date, mostly because students and staff kept making suggestions for more fun characters to try out. There are a few I didn't get to (Handsome Squidward got left by the wayside, sadly) but I had a great time drawing and cutting these designs. The links below each photo will take you to the .bmp file I used with Cricut Design Studio to make the snowflake, so please try 'em on your own if you like!
Wallace & Gromit (2023 series)
I had planned to do a chess series in 2023, partly because I had become interested in the game again and partly because I thought it might be nice to make designs that weren't licensed characters. The first few designs I tried were disappointing, though - just kind of flat and not very exciting to look at. I was feeling stuck until my wife suggested Wallace & Gromit, which turned out to be a brilliant idea. I'm most proud of my Gromit snowflake, but Lady Tottington and the Were-Rabbit are right behind.
Wallace
Gromit
Feathers McGraw
The Wrong Trousers
The Were-Rabbit
Lady Tottington
Preston
Shaun the Sheep
The Farmer
Robots! (2022 series)
The Robots series marks the inflection point where I stopped torturing my fingers with paper-folding and Xacto cuts and started using the Cricut. This made it possible to do designs with many more intricate elements, leading to some of my favorite designs of all. Wall-E and the MST3K robots stand out here in particular, but Johnny-5 is also a sign that I had become drunk with power.
The Iron Giant
Rosie (The Jetsons)
Marvin the Paranoid Android
Bender
WALL-E
Johnny-5 (Short Circuit)
Robby the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
Maria (Metropolis)
Tom Servo and Crow (MST3K)
Nintendo Characters (2021 series)
My last year of exclusive hand-cutting! I experimented a lot this time around with more disconnected elements like the ducks in the Duck Hunt design and King Hippo's fists (still proud of Little Mack in the central design of that one!). Mario was simple, but remains a favorite of mine.

Piranha Plant and a look at the old process: Bone folder, fingertip X-acto blade, papercutting scissors and just one of several hole-punches. These would take me about 90 minutes to fold and cut.
