Honda’s Canadian electric-vehicle proposal illustrates why a manufacturing announcement must be read together with its subsequent revisions. True Industry News follows the plan from April 2024 through indefinite suspension in May 2026. The original approximately C$15 billion supply chain included proposed vehicle and battery plants at Alliston, with annual capacities of 240,000 vehicles and 36 GWh. Those figures described intended capacity, not factories already producing at that rate. The initial 2028 vehicle-production expectation also ceased to be a dependable schedule after later announcements changed the project’s status.
Materials partnerships formed separate parts of the proposal. Honda and POSCO Future M agreed to pursue cathode-material collaboration, while Asahi Kasei discussions addressed battery separators. A separator keeps electrode materials from direct contact while permitting lithium-ion movement. The November 2024 shareholder agreement advanced the separator venture beyond preliminary discussions, but company establishment, regulatory approvals and factory startup remained distinct milestones. Honda’s proposed C$417 million commitment combined share subscription and other investment, whereas C$240 million described proposed company capital. Neither amount is interchangeable with the facility’s separate investment estimate or the full Canadian supply-chain budget.
Port Colborne’s November groundbreaking supplied evidence of early site activity rather than commercial separator production. The account describes initial employees and earthworks, with structural and utility work still ahead. Projected full-time jobs therefore differ from startup hires and construction work. Battery research with GS Yuasa had its own chronology: an agreement in May 2023 preceded the research venture’s operational start that August. That Japanese research organisation could contribute development expertise without being the Canadian manufacturing plant itself. Its establishment capital and reserve also remained separate accounting amounts.
The United States manufacturing programme provides another comparison with clearer equipment milestones. By February 2025, Honda reported six large die-casting machines installed at Anna for battery-case parts. Marysville had consolidated assembly lines and prepared dedicated pack areas, while East Liberty had added paint and quality facilities. These were Ohio developments, distinct from the proposed Canadian factories. Earlier targets for lower battery procurement and vehicle production costs were company objectives rather than measured savings from an operating Alliston EV plant. Proposed Canadian tax credits and Ontario incentives similarly described support mechanisms, not confirmation that their full estimated amounts had been disbursed.
The project’s later status is central to the source’s conclusion. Honda postponed the Canadian programme by approximately two years in May 2025 without confirming a replacement opening date. In May 2026, it announced indefinite suspension and again supplied no resumption or commercial-production timetable. The accompanying North American strategy redirected capacity and investment toward petrol and hybrid vehicles, including planned hybrid battery production on part of the L-H lines. Those wider allocation decisions do not establish completion of every factory conversion. The resulting account distinguishes installed equipment, established ventures, conditional support and suspended capacity plans instead of presenting them as one completed expansion.
