1. Differentially Private Randomized Response Design
The Differentially Private Randomized Response Design is an interactive web application that helps researchers develop privacy-preserving surveys with sensitive questions. It assists in selecting appropriate survey settings that balance respondent privacy, statistical accuracy, and sample size.
Imagine a researcher wants to estimate how many people have evaded taxes, used illegal drugs, or cheated on an examination. Since these are sensitive topics, many people may hesitate to answer honestly if they fear that their identity or response could be revealed.
The web application helps researchers design surveys that protect participants' privacy while still producing reliable statistical results. For example, suppose a researcher is conducting a survey on illegal drug use and wants to ensure a high level of privacy. By entering the desired privacy level in the application, the application automatically determines the appropriate survey settings to protect respondents. Alternatively, if the researcher has a target level of statistical accuracy, the application recommends survey settings to achieve that level.
If the researcher wishes to satisfy both privacy and accuracy requirements simultaneously, the application determines the minimum number of participants needed for the survey to achieve the desired level of privacy while maintaining the required statistical accuracy. This enables researchers to plan efficient studies without compromising respondent confidentiality.
By balancing privacy, statistical accuracy, and sample size, the web application makes it easier to design trustworthy surveys on sensitive topics such as health, finance, crime, and social behavior.
