Simon Bittmann

I am a CNRS research fellow in sociology, working at the University of Strasbourg.

My research focuses on the study of U.S. and European capitalisms, through both sociological and historical lenses. I study the effect of finance and markets on inequalities, along class, race and gender lines.

My dissertation studied the origins of financial exploitation in the United States, between 1900 and 1940. The book, entitled Working for Debt, was published by Columbia University Press.

I currently work on the financialization of French colonial firms; "exploitation" as a sociological concept, and housing inequalities in France

Je suis chargé de recherches au CNRS (section 40) associé au laboratoire Sociétés, acteurs, gouvernement en Europe.

Mes travaux portent sur le capitalisme, sa régulation et les effets des dynamiques marchandes sur les inégalités de classes, de genre et de race.

Ma thèse s'est intéressée aux origines de l'exploitation par le crédit aux Etats-Unis, entre 1900 et 1945. Le livre, Working for Debt, a paru chez Columbia University Press (2024).

Mes projets actuels portent sur l'histoire des entreprises coloniales françaises, l'exploitation en tant que concept sociologique, ainsi que les inégalités d'accès au logement.
