Teaching for me is not merely a noble profession but it is a responsibility towards the intellectual growth of the society and nation building. It is a profession that gives one the opportunity to remain as a scholar throughout his/her life. I feel proud of my profession and take pride to find myself contributing to make a strong intellectual society and nation.
I have been aiming to become a mathematics teacher from my schooldays. I used to compare teaching methodologies of my teachers and what ever I liked among their teachings, tried to inculcate the same in my teaching. I personally believe that teaching is an art and it needs continuous improvement.
I feel that a teacher should be a guide, a facilitator and an inspiration to a student, who can motivate their student to swim bravely in the ocean of knowledge. Over the years of both as a teacher and a student I am rediscovering several tenets of teaching and learning. Through my classroom teaching I want to see my students achieve the following:
Make a strong hold on the basic concepts about a subject so that they can learn the subject further by their own.
Generate immense curiosity about the subject and its applications.
I feel that to create healthy environment in a class room we need a good teacher as well as good students. By good students I want to mean one who is motivated, eager to learn new things in every class and actively participate in discussions inside the classroom.
I have been in teaching profession since 2002. The most important lesson regarding teaching I have learned in this period is that the students we teach are no different than we as students. They may be less motivated, less interested, or less adept mathematically, but fundamentally they learn best in the same conditions that we do. As teachers it is our responsibility to understand student motivation, interest, and skills and create a healthy environment for the best exchange of knowledge and where all students are comfortable in asking questions.
In my teaching, I always try to make the material simple, interesting and understandable to the students, to help the students have confidence in their mathematical abilities, and to show the students that mathematics can be fun. I also remind my students that mathematics is not a spectators sports and encourage them to participate in the class by asking questions.
I encourage my students to form a group to solve the assignment and exercise problems. I ask them to investigate if there are alternative approaches for solving a particular problem. I also advise them to come up with their own proof of any result that I discussed in the class. I believe that such practices help students to gain confidence on the subject. I am always open for any kind of constructive criticism about my teaching to improve my teaching. In future, I want to see myself as a better teacher, a motivator, a better learner and researcher.
