UNIT 5: Science Fiction
The Science Fiction genre allows us to explore the possibilities of the world in which we live, encourages us to question the possibility of worlds unknown, and requires us to challenge our imaginations. In doing so, we are able to examine the world around us and envision a world in which we do or do not want to live. Through a close examination of science fiction, multi-genre texts, students will make a connection between real-world discoveries that often begin with an idea some may have deemed impossible. Following analysis, discussion and reflection, students will craft interpretative responses that demonstrate their ability to employ inferential skills, make connections, draw complex conclusion, and use text evidence to support their analyses.

- Science Fiction writers use a variety of devices to illustrate the human condition: drama, humor, irony, and tragedy.
- Science Fiction is a genre that uses metaphor to reflect the human experience, current technology, and society.
- Science Fiction works reflect futurism, humanity’s relationship with technology and its desire to connect with other worlds, moral ambiguity, and human flaws.
- Science Fiction can be predictive, inspiring technological change.
- A technologically advanced society may become oppressive rather than freeing through excessive regulation.
- Plausibility is crucial to the success of Science Fiction’s metaphorical storytelling that leads individuals to sacrifice religion, culture, artistry, beauty, and greatness.
Essential Questions:
- What are the costs of technological advances?
- How do technological advancements affect our relationship with nature?
- Does science fiction bring us a greater understanding of what could be or make us fear the unknown?
- What drives the need for humanity’s technological advancement?
- Is technology changing what it means to be human?
- What are the responsibilities of a creator to his or her creation? What is the creation entitled to from its creator?
