Space Coast Model Investment Club News

The Better Investing Space Coast Chapter Model Investment Club (SCMIC) was started at the end of 2013 by 5 Chapter Directors. SCMIC is open to the public and to adding partners. Speaking of adding new partners, please join us in welcoming our newest partner Laura Z. Laura became an associate partner at our October meeting. That brings up our club membership total to 12 partners.
As a model club we hope to serve both as an example of how investment clubs function and also encouragement to others who want to start their own club. Our club is blessed with many experienced and knowledgeable individuals who have been and still are partners in several investment clubs. Their years of experience are available to help you should you be interested in starting your own BetterInvesting investment club.
We do operate totally online, which is necessary since our partners are scattered throughout Florida. Anyone interested in attending our online meetings is welcomed to register for our meetings by going to the Space/Gulf Coast Chapter website “Registration Links.” Our club meets the first Monday of each month at 7:30 pm EDT.
If you are currently part of a club you may get some ideas for education topics and stocks to study, as each month partners take turns presenting both education topics and a stock study using BetterInvesting’s SSG online tools or Toolkit6. During each meeting we review our portfolio and “Stock Watchers” report on their assigned stock. Some of the current stocks we have studied are APH, ULTA, OZRK, DG and DLTR. In October the partnership voted to add both ULTA and OZRK to our portfolio.
How we doing? Well our recent club performance according to our myIClub report, as of Oct 23, is up a little over 23% for 2017 YTD. With the club going on its 4th year the lifetime growth is a little better than 11%. For comparison this year the Vanguard 500 index and Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Funds are at 19.6% and 19.3% respectively for 2017 YTD.
Education Topics
As mentioned previously each month an education topic is presented by one of the partners. We have had some interesting topics covered the last few months. Bob reviewed the Value Line Training Guide that explains what all the numbers are telling us. Steve educated us on “Selling Covered Calls” to generate additional income and enhance overall portfolio return. Bruce did a segment on how the Preferred Procedure might be used as a sanity check for your EPS judgements when doing your stock study. In October Ken demonstrated some “Off Topics Tips, Tricks and Techniques”
We record our club meetings and archive the education and SSG presentations so they are available for review. As mentioned above you can register to attend club meetings via the Space Coast Chapter website “Registration Links.” While there you can also register for the Chapter's 1st Tuesday Workshop and Board of Directors meeting. You do not have to be a BI member to attend the webinars, so if you know someone who might be interested please direct them to the site. There’s no obligation implied by registering to attend. Unique to the online model club format is the opportunity for attendees to ask questions or make comments via the chat box which is monitored during the meeting. We hope to have you attend our next club meeting.
