The Bintulu Sustainability Award (BiSA) is an initiative introduced by the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) in collaboration with strategic partners, namely the Department of Environment (DOE), the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS), and the Bintulu District Education Office. This initiative is part of an effort to strengthen the sustainable development agenda in the Bintulu Division, involving individuals, communities, educational institutions, government agencies, businesses (perusahaan), and the service sector.
The implementation of BiSA is aligned with the development aspirations outlined in the BDA Strategic Plan 2024–2030: Bintulu Low Carbon Industrial Hub, the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. In tandem with Bintulu's rapid growth as a major industrial hub in Sarawak, priority is given to a development approach that balances economic progress, environmental protection, and social well-being.
To support this sustainability agenda, BiSA utilizes the BiSA Sustainability Pillars Framework, which encompasses five core pillars: Governance and Sustainability Leadership, Environmental Performance, Innovation and Circular Economy, Social Responsibility and Community Impact, and Impact Measurement and Continuous Improvement. Through this framework, BiSA serves not only as an awards platform but also as a sustainability ecosystem that encourages the sharing of best practices, strategic cooperation, and collaborative project development to support Bintulu's transformation into a sustainable and resilient industrial city for the future.
The award is organized to provide recognition to individuals, communities, educational institutions, government agencies, enterprises, and the services that have demonstrated significant commitment and contributions in supporting the implementation of sustainable development in the Bintulu Division.
Through this recognition, BiSA serves as a platform to appreciate initiatives and best practices that contribute to environmental preservation, social well-being, and responsible economic development. This recognition is expected to encourage broader participation among various stakeholders to strengthen the culture of sustainability within the Bintulu Division.
The objectives of the BiSA 2026 Awards are to:
a) Recognize the contributions of participants who have demonstrated commitment and achievements in implementing sustainable management practices within the Bintulu Division;
b) Encourage the adoption and integration of sustainable management practices, as well as continuous improvement in operations, management, and development activities across various sectors;
c) Promote the development of innovation, creativity, and the use of new technologies that support more efficient and sustainable resource management;
d) Increase awareness and foster positive attitudes among the community regarding the importance of sustainable management and environmental preservation.
