Jessica Symons is a self-taught, eclectic artist living in Red Deer (Treaty 6/7), specializing in oil landscapes and seascapes. With a deep connection to the natural beauty of the north, much of her work is inspired by the auroras—a symbol of hope and the cyclical nature of time—rooted in her personal experience of loss at a young age. The northern lights have become a cornerstone of her artistic journey, reflecting both the guiding spirit of her late father and a broader spiritual connection to the world around her.
Much of Jessica's creative vision is also shaped by the experience of moving to the United States at a young age, which left her feeling distant from the familiar landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. This physical and emotional separation cultivated a sense of longing that continues to inform her art—a yearning for the wild, mountainous spaces of her early childhood that she seeks to reconnect with through each brushstroke.
In addition to her work as an artist, Jessica is a passionate organizer and activist, using her creativity to support causes close to her heart. She has integrated her vibrant and dynamic art practice with philanthropy, organizing events such as gallery fundraisers and live painting demonstrations to raise funds for humanitarian aid. Beyond the canvas, Jessica is deeply involved in community organizing as a member of a local humanitarian organization, a queer working circle, and a collaborative group dedicated to preserving arts and culture in Red Deer. She has volunteered for other queer advocacy groups, animal rights initiatives, and mental health support programs. As the lead artist and peer support for the Creative Wellness group at the Red Deer Addiction and Mental Health Clinic, she has helped raise funds and provide art supplies for individuals navigating mental health challenges. She is also building a career in harm reduction and is part of the organizing team for Recovery Days.
Jessica is committed to making art accessible and affordable, ensuring that her creative work and classes are within reach for all who wish to explore their artistic potential, regardless of income. Through the intersection of art and advocacy, she strives to leave a legacy of love, compassion, and meaningful social change, hoping to inspire others to use their talents for the greater good.
