This is the website of our Birmingham Adrenal Team. We are a multidisciplinary team including medical staff at the University Hospital Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth) NHS Trust and academic researchers from the University of Birmingham. Hereby, we intend to present and promote our services, our outputs and our educational activities to a wide audience, including:
scientific community and research teams
healthcare professionals
patients with adrenal diseases
general public
philanthropists interested in supporting health research and rare cancer studies
Adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both kidneys. They produce a number of hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential body functions. Adrenal hormones include adrenaline and noradrenaline, and the steroids cortisol and aldosterone.
There are several types of disorders that can affect the adrenal gland. Some are frequent in the general population and some are rare (such as adrenal cancer), each with its own symptoms and treatments. More details and information about different adrenal diseases can be found in the web pages of official endocrine societies (see "Useful links")
Primary Hyperaldosteronism Adrenal Cushing Syndrome Mild Autonomous Cortisol Secretion (MACS) Pheochromocytoma Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC) Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) Primary Adrenal Insufficency (Addison's Disease)
Our team is based at the University of Birmingham and the University Hospitals Birmingham (West Midlands, UK). We bring together clinical, translational and basic research with clinical care and education about adrenal diseases. We ultimately aim to improve the management of patients with adrenal diseases and increase awareness among healthcare staff and the general public.
