Farmer Jenn's
Plant Observation Journal
Follow along with me as I complete my plant observation journal! You can cut out the pages to make a booklet, like I did, if you want.
p.3 - I planted broccoli, bok choy, basil, beans, kale, and lettuce in my garden bed. What did you plant?
p.4 - This is a map of my garden bed with the locations of my plants in the bed. Where did you plant your plants?
Turn to page 5a and color in the images if you feel like coloring
Next, I cut out all of the images
Last, but not least, organize the images in the order you think they should go! Does the "seeds" image go first?
I will post the answer key further down!
Life Cycle of a Plant - Answer Key!
p.6 Label the parts of the strawberry plant
Check out the teeny tiny seeds!
p.7 Can you think of edible roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds? What is your favorite edible plant part?
p.8 I'm going to harvest my bok choy today! Bok choy has edible leaves and stems!
Bok choy is easy to harvest! Cut the root sticking up out of the ground, at soil level, to harvest the entire plant. We used scissors.
To prep bok choy for cooking:
1.Cut the bottom off the plant. Doesn't it look like a rose? * Have an adult help if you need assistance with a cutting tool*
2. Cut bok choy leaves and stems into bite size pieces. If you don't feel comfortable using a knife, you can use scissors! Edible plant confetti!
3. Rinse your bok choy with water to clean it before eating!
p.9 What recipe will you try with your bok choy? Soup, Stir Fry, Salad?
We made bok choy ramen!
Ingredients: Cooked and rinsed udon noodles
Miso Paste
Tofu (bite size pieces)
Broth
Bok choy (bite size pieces)
How to:
Heat broth in pot or microwave (have an adult help using stove or microwave)
Stir in miso paste (Tablespoon for a quart of broth or just a little for a single bowl)
Place noodles (can be any cooked noodles you like), tofu, and bok choy in bowl.
Carefully pour hot broth over the bowl contents. Wait 5 minutes and enjoy!
Bonus!! Bok choy art!
Paint the bottom of the bok choy "rose" or any other veggies and press them onto paper for veggie block printing :D
p.10 I colored in the things I think plants need to survive. What are the things that I colored? What do plants need to survive?
p.11 Which of these insects are decomposers and which of these insects are pollinators?
p.11 My decomposers and pollinators
Do you know which insect does both?!
p.12 Pests
I drew a praying mantis in the box to keep these pests out of my garden :)
p.13 Beneficial Insects!
My favorite beneficial insect is the snakefly! Have you ever seen a snakefly? Did you know that snakeflys wag their ovipositors like dogs wag their tails. So cute!
p. 14 - I saw this butterfly on my broccoli plant!
p. 15 - I think it's a harmful organism because there are a lot of new holes in my plants.
p. 16 - I will take care of my plant so that I will have veggies to eat!
I crossed out Summer and wrote Fall because we are growing in the autumn season.
p. 17 - There are holes in my broccoli plant leaves. I also found beans to eat!
Whoops! I forgot p. 18! Even farmer Jenn makes mistakes sometimes often :)
p. 19 - On day 10 I noticed that my broccoli and kale plants have a lot of holes in their leaves but nothing is eating my bok choy. I used the concept of "negative space" in art to draw my plant. Can you draw your plant using negative space? The following link explains negative space!
I followed the instructions and cut out/taped my paper ruler together
My plant was 32 cm tall!
p.20 On day 20 my plant was 32 cm tall and had some big chew marks. It was a windy day!
I tried to imagine what my plant would look like from the ground if I were tiny! Can you imagine what your plants would look like if you were tiny? The size of an ant, maybe?
p.21 On day 25 I noticed my bok choy plant is almost ready to harvest!
Do you have any yummy bok choy recipes?
I used chalk pastels to draw my bok choy from the perspective of an ant on the ground. Can you draw your plant from the perspective of an ant?
p.22 My final broccoli plant height is 50cm!
My kale plant leaves came back after they were all eaten by bugs!
