This story is related to Akbar and his Navratna Birbal. Based on this story, the famous proverb "Birbal ki khichdi " has started to be used. The story goes like this:
One day Emperor Akbar announced that the man who would stand overnight in the cold waters of the river in this winter season, would be rewarded with royal treasures.
Hearing this announcement, a poor washerman spent the whole night standing in the river and the next day he came to the king's court and asked for the reward.
The king asked that washerman, can you tell with what power you stood in the river at night?
The washerman replied with a fervent look, Alampanah, I kept looking at the burning lamp on the roof of the palace all night With his power, I could stand in the river all night.
The king heard his answer and said, it means that due to the heat of the light of the palace, you could stand in the water all night, so you cannot be truly entitled to the reward.
The washerman became depressed and went to Birbal and spoke in a disheartened voice, the king in the court refused to give the reward. Dhobi also told the reason to Birbal.
Birbal consoled the poor washerman and sent him home. The next day the king did not find Birbal in the court and sent a khadim to call him.
Khadim came and informed him, Birbal has said that when his khichdi is fully cooked, then only he will be able to come to the court.
The king was surprised to hear this. He reached Birbal's house with his courtiers. There he saw rice being hung in a handia on top of two long bamboos and a fire was burning on the ground below.
The Emperor immediately asked, Birbal, what a spectacle is this?
Will khichdi be cooked in the handia placed at such a distance?
Surely it will be cooked. Birbal replied.
how ? The king asked curtly?
Jahanpanah just like the Dhobi stood in the river water all night due to the heat of the lamp burning above the palace. Birbal said.
Emperor Akbar was ashamed to hear this logical answer from Birbal.
He immediately issued an order to find and reward the washerman.
When people came to know this, "Birbal ki khichdi" became popular as a saying. Which simply means that it is difficult to say an easy task or to spend too much time in doing a small task.
