CONFÍE (Coordinación General para el Fomento a la Investigación Científica e Innovación del Estado de Sinaloa) has released a video interview featuring PhD candidate Lidia Lizbeth Hernández Cubas. Originally from the indigenous community of San Andrés Chicahuaxtla in Oaxaca, Mexico, Lidia’s story showcases both academic excellence and a strong commitment to social impact.
Lidia is pursuing her doctorate at BIOTHERA-Lab in a joint program between the University of Granada and the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, under the supervision of Mattia Bramini and Carmen Lucía Moraila-Martínez. Her research focuses on laser-induced graphene for applications in neurobiology, developing innovative tools to advance the study of the nervous system and improve health technologies.
The interview, conducted by a science blog, presents Lidia’s personal and professional journey, highlighting her achievements as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Her story emphasizes the importance of diversity in STEM and serves as an inspiration for future generations of women scientists.
PhD Student Lidia Hernández shares her research for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Granada has inaugurated the exhibition “Great Women Scientists in Applied Physics” to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The exhibition is now permanently displayed in the Department of Applied Physics.
The initiative highlights the achievements of pioneering women in applied physics, combining scientific biographies with original illustrations created by Paola Sánchez Moreno. Her artistic contribution strengthens the exhibition’s message of visibility, inspiration, and gender equality in science.
This activity reinforces the Faculty’s commitment to recognizing women’s contributions to physics and encouraging future generations of women and girls to pursue scientific careers.

The 1st International Workshop on Biotechnology for Applied Life Sciences 2024 (BALS 2024) is being organized by the Universidad de Granada (Dept. of Cell Biology and Dept. of Applied Physics, UGR - Spain) and the Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale (Dept. of Health Sciences, UPO - Italy). It will be held in the Fuentenueva Campus, Faculty of Science, University of Granada (Spain) on 7th June 2024.
The event is organized within the activities of the GLIOBUSTERS project (PID2021.124OA.I00; MICIN & AEI) and the BIOTHERA-Lab (UGR).
Given the relentless progress in biotechnology, embracing multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary strategies has become imperative, spanning from novel biomaterial design to the latest genetic-based therapies. BALS 2024 seeks to present to early career researchers the most promising advancing techniques and devices rooted in biomaterials, RNA therapy, neuroscience, cell and molecular biology with applications spanning from medicine to environmental domains.
BALS 2024 aims to unite scholars and professionals from academia and industry across disciplines such as microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, medicine, biology, neuroscience, material sciences and genetics. The primary goal is to give a broad spectrum of the different fields of applications of biotechnology disciplines to early career researchers and stimulate their scientific creativity by deepening their knowledge in this specific area. Finally, we also aim to foster synergies, fortify existing partnerships, and forge new ones within the participants.
The Faculty of Science of UGR and the dynamic and bustling city of Granada provides an ideal setting for this event.
