Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful, but their vulnerabilities to 𝐣𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 pose significant security and ethical concerns. Malicious actors can manipulate LLMs to spread misinformation, extract sensitive data, and bypass safeguards.
Our latest study introduces 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭-𝐆), a prompt-based defense mechanism leveraging vector databases and embedding techniques to detect and filter malicious content in real time. Key findings:
✅ 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Reduced jailbreak attack success rate (ASR) to 2.08% when integrated with Llama 2 13B chat.
✅ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Effectively identifies misleading or adversarial prompts.
✅ 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 & 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲: Ensures ethical AI deployment without compromising model utility.

🚀 Excited to share the latest advancements in colorectal cancer segmentation from our research!
Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest malignancies, and traditional manual examination methods often lack consistency and efficiency. To address this, our study explores advanced segmentation models—VGG16-UNet, ResNet50-UNet, MobileNet-UNet, and MobileViT-UNet. Notably, this is the first study to integrate 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐕𝐢𝐓 as a UNet encoder.
Our findings highlight 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐕𝐢𝐓-𝐔𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 as the leading model, achieving impressive metrics:
✅ Dice ratio: 0.944 ± 0.030
✅ Jaccard index: 0.897 ± 0.049
✅ Precision: 0.955 ± 0.046
✅ Recall: 0.939 ± 0.038
Using 𝐓𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬, it ranked as the best model, significantly outperforming existing benchmarks in colorectal histopathology segmentation.

𝐖𝐡𝐲? Focal Cortical Dysplasia Type II (𝘍𝘊𝘋-𝘐𝘐) is one of the leading causes of drug-resistant 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐳𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 (DRES), particularly in children. This condition, characterized by abnormal brain cell organization, poses a significant challenge to treatment, as conventional therapies often fail to control seizures.
𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭? In this groundbreaking research, we present a 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 employing multiple deep learning models—to tackle the intricate task of identifying FCD-II and its subtypes (𝘍𝘊𝘋-𝘐𝘐𝘢 and 𝘍𝘊𝘋-𝘐𝘐𝘣). Framework analyzes 𝐌𝐑𝐈 images from multiple planes (axial, coronal, and sagittal) across T1-weighted and FLAIR MRI modalities, providing a comprehensive view of brain abnormalities.
Furthermore, by considering demographic factors like age and gender, as well as clinical characteristics such as the affected hemisphere and lobes, our framework offers a more 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥 approach. These factors significantly impact FCD-II detection, allowing for a tailored assessment.
Our approach emphasizes statistical rigor through the use of various 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘴 and performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, specificity, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), and weighted F1-score, along with Area Under the ROC Curve (AUROC) and recall-precision curves (AUPR), we ensure that the models not only perform well but also generalize effectively.

We are delighted to recognize Harmon Jansheski for his outstanding contributions to our Biomedical Sensors & Systems Lab. In a short time, Harmon has significantly advanced our research and development efforts. His work on experimental protocol design, conduct studies, data acquisition, and biomedical signal processing has been invaluable in driving our projects forward.
Harmon has also demonstrated exceptional collaboration skills, effectively working with our software development team. His involvement in conducting user-experience studies on our in-house mobile phone apps, developed over the past two years, has been critical in ensuring that our developed technologies meet the highest standards of usability and effectiveness.
In Harmon's own words, "This project is both challenging and enlightening. It taught me how to conduct proper experiments and develop effective protocols. We are developing a wearable sensor-based phone app that can read and interpret biomedical signals for healthcare applications. The experience gave me a deep understanding of working in a real lab setting and provided invaluable hands-on experience in research and development."

We investigated how various past health conditions could influence the risk of developing 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 (𝐏𝐃). Our study looked at 56 different 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘴, and 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 to see how they affect 𝐏𝐃 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤. We found that some health conditions may 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 the risk of PD, while others may 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 it.
By examining these 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, doctors can better 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭 who is at risk for PD and take steps to manage the disease early.

This work offers critical insights into the strengths and weaknesses of various transformation methods, 𝐂𝐍𝐍 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬, and 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬, along with their 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 performances.

James’ journey with us has been nothing short of exceptional, and we couldn’t be prouder of his accomplishments.

James’ achievements in our lab highlight his technical expertise and dedication:
●Android App Development: He developed Android mobile applications for healthcare applications. These apps integrate our laboratory-developed wearable healthcare devices to support data collection and analysis for biomedical research.
●Software Engineering Excellence: Leveraging his knowledge of computer programming, Java, and APIs, James applied the principles of the software development lifecycle to create various robust and reliable phone apps.
●Bluetooth Low Energy Integration: James implemented Bluetooth Low Energy functionalities, enabling the app to seamlessly scan, connect, and transfer data from our developed novel biomedical sensors.
●Data Management Solutions: He introduced features to store collected data in databases and local CSV files, ensuring the app’s practicality and usability in real-world research scenarios.
●Research Contributions: James’ work will be published in an upcoming research paper, showcasing his dedication to advancing healthcare technology.

Congratulations to our undergraduate student researcher, Zachary Johnson (Bryce), on his first journal paper publication.
Despite having a very busy schedule due to the rigorous electrical engineering course curriculum, Bryce completed this research work in just one semester working in the Biomedical Sensors & Systems Lab.
This is an outstanding achievement by a student from UNF College of Computing, Engineering & Construction (CCEC) at University of North Florida. Bryce is currently working on experimental studies to create human digital twins using wearable sensors for healthcare applications.

Our mental health significantly impacts our overall well-being, relationships, and professional success. We present a brief online video-mediated compassion training program for university students that may increase compassion toward self and others.
