Built between 1898 and 1900, this flamboyant pub is a dazzling showpiece of Hope Street. Constructed for the brewer Robert Cain, the building was designed by local architect Walter Thomas, working with craftsmen from the School of Architecture and Applied Arts at what is now the University of Liverpool.

Outside the pub, our stunning metal gates are amongst the finest Art Nouveau work in Britain – and the interior is just as impressive: spread over five floors, each of our rooms is beautifully decorated with a musical theme.

No visit is complete without a visit to our famous gents’ toilets – not a claim many pubs can make! We’re also part of the city’s rich musical history – Buddy Holly performed here, as did Paul McCartney (as seen on James Corden’s The Late Late Show). Locally known as The Phil, our pub was said to be one of John Lennon’s favourite bars. If that’s not enough music for you, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is just over the road.
